4-year term No Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members or “directors” – are the elected governing body of the school district, serving four-year terms. The school board’s governance responsibilities fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight; diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional district Superintendent and certificated teaching staff and personnel. One of the critical duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any school levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

Experience (300 characters max) I have 28 years experience of mentoring, working with kids, the school district, non-profits and organizations for at risk kids.
The growing apathy in the school district is very concerning. Fundraising, volunteer hours and parent surveys are all down year over year due to the frustration from the lack of communication and transparency. This issue is driving community partners, families and students to not be engaged, as there is continued lack of urgency and response from the district.
I support Charter Schools and different learning opportunities. As someone who has one child in an alternative school and one in a mainstream, I understand the need for both. Bellevue has the benefit of being a progressive school district that stays on the front edge of education research and programs. That means we already have the school choice that charters provide, which most of the rest of the state lacks. Big Picture is an example of the district embracing a charter school model and making it fit in the Bellevue way. Bellevue still has an education gap that is more than based on race. It has an opportunity gap with students who do not fit the traditional mold. Charters, sponsored by the district, would bring together innovative focused models and the high standards that the district requires from all its programs. In order to support the whole student, we need to support charter schools as well.
I believe testing is necessary in order to find out the progression of students and the district. However, testing should be used as a baseline to find alternative opportunities for student growth and learning. It is difficult to help the student if testing is the only measure of ones success. Although, testing is important it is not the end all.
Students should be set up on a schedule where they are able to get at least 8 hours of sleep, attend a full school day, yet still have time to do extra-curricular to gain a full social and emotional experience.
The Bellevue school district has one of the highest graduation rates in the state. To improve, there needs to be more family, school and community engagement for the at risk students to make sure they are headed towards success. To ensure college readiness the schools, family and community all need to be engaged.
Bullying is being brought to light in our district on a national stage. I am confident there are several principals who have diffused situations at their school. Too many incidences of bullying have made it to the school board and onto national news programs such as the Today Show. There is very little urgency from the district. Within 24 hours of the incidence being reported, all concerns should be addressed with all families, an administrator and all students involved. Until a parent or guardian of the bullier has a meeting with the administrator, the student should be removed from all areas that are common for the victim to be. It is to be understood that bullying is a crime and there is no grey area. This must be dealt with quickly and swiftly to make sure there is no escalation or worse consequences. School should be a place all individuals feel safe, which makes bullying a very crucial and urgent issue to address.
This leads us to two great options. The first would be to implement it in to the core curriculum allowing it to be achieved by all students attending school. The second option would be to allow students to earn these civic credits outside school hours about their own passions through community service while being overseen by an advisor.
It is hurting the student more to remove them from the class. I think it is important that students understand through restorative justice that students understand how to act in a classroom, work and community setting and pulling a student out of classroom will lead to short term results with long term repercussions.

1. Inclusion 2. Racial Equity 3. Culture of Service To me, the three are identified through a collaborative process and hence they are of equal important and urgent. These are areas are where we need to look for barriers and opportunity to provide access to learning for our students.
In the Bellevue School District, we do not support Charter Schools.
First, I would like to move from using the term testing to assessing. To me, it is more accurate term to use as we are assessing our students' growth and learning in order to support them.
In Bellevue, we started to move our Highschool Start-time from 7:30 to 8:30 last year (2016-2017).

1. Bellevue School District has built in graduation requirement for our students to earn 40 hours of volunteering in areas of their interests. 2. Bellevue School District offers "Race in the US" for our HS students starting 2016-2017 3. We support our Curriculum Department in working collaboratively with Social Studies educators across the State to ensure Civics is included in many of courses so that our students will have ample opportunities to satisfy State's requirement.
Bellevue School District Board has eliminated short term suspension for our Elementary and Secondary Schools. We view that it is our responsibility as educators to help guide our students to make good choices and to learn from their mistakes. We have invested in training administrators, educators, student leaders in Restorative Practice and use mindfulness tools to support this work.
