What viable tactical steps are you proposing that would attract people to your city/town and keep current residents from leaving Long Island for other states?

What specifically will you do to increase the availability of low income/middle class housing, rental as well as ownership, in order to keep our young people from leaving and to attract other young people to our communities.

Since we are seeing the effects of climate change in the form of serious hurricanes and other weather events here and elsewhere in the country, what will you do to strengthen the infrastructure of our towns and cities to deal with the aftermath of such events?

Our middle class families and seniors can stay living in America’s largest township only when government respects taxpayers and does more with less. As our Councilman I’ve worked with Supervisor Santino to cut spending, reduce costs and upgrade our financial outlook. The town’s work over the past year turned an inherited $23.5 million operational budget deficit into a real $5 milllion surplus. Newsday just reported an amazing 56% cut to our overtime costs and the State Comptroller showed the town’s dramatic improvement in our fiscal stress. Hempstead Town has also consolidated services like our vehicle maintenance garages from 16 to 2 and is increasing its non-taxpayer funded revenues. By stretching every tax dollar, we can continue lowering the tax burden for neighbors to keep them here.
Creating housing opportunities for the middle class builds for our future and keeps our youth, families and seniors here in their hometowns. I have voted for numerous projects that provide affordable workforce housing for neighbors in many of the different communities. Our national economy is still recovering and with it, the construction industry and housing market. Creating a range of affordable housing choices – whether it is a traditional suburban home, a garden apartment, condos, townhomes or senior housing – for our workforce and neighbors of all ages continues to be a main focus.
Hempstead Town was slammed by Hurricane Sandy, and our Township has done more for victims of the storm than any other local government while also responding to climate change. Improving the town’s infrastructure is an important priority. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, our town workforce has rebuilt at coastal locations. Further, we are rebuilding roadways and drainage systems, as well as executing associated upgrades with a robust $20 million commitment in 2017. And, I am working with Supervisor Santino on identifying additional resources to expand our commitment to infrastructure projects in 2018 and beyond. Further, I am working with the Supervisor to access over $10 million in Governor’s Office of Storm Recovery funds to elevate roads, improve storm drainage and protect low lying areas with important infrastructure enhancements. While in the County Legislature, I passed several pieces of legislation designed to better prepare our communities for any unforseen weather events.

We need to look at ways to develop downtown areas to attract young families to want to stay here and raise their families, develop true affordable housing options for our younger residents as well as our older residents who may be on fixed incomes. By revitalizing our communities and bringing in businesses that will help create jobs, we can help keep our current residents working and living in our town.
I would look at areas in which multi-use housing can be incorporated into our towns. By utilizing retail businesses and office space with living space, it will both attract businesses to the area, create jobs, while also creating affordable housing options.
One of the main things we need to do is help keep our wetlands as intact as possible and keep our natural marshes and eco systems healthy to act as the first barrier of defense from a storm surge. By utilizing our natural resources that are already in place, that will help ease some of the storm damage. Any new developments that are made should be constructed with plans of reducing impacts of a natural disaster, and current structures should be raised, and reinforced to current codes where possible.
