We continue to face financial constraints due to severe funding cuts over the last four years. Our teachers deserve better compensation than we have been able to offer, which is making it increasingly more difficult to recruit and retain the most qualified teachers. We also have pressing needs in the area of continued maintenance and upgrades of all of our facilities. With all of this said, the Washington Co. School System continues to be one of the best in the state of Virginia. We are proud of all of the accomplishments of our students and teachers who continue to receive recognition on local, state, and national levels. We simply continue to strive to our commitment to the success of every student.
To be completely honest, the decreased funding has not had any drastic effect on academic performance. This is due to the dedicated staff of teachers who continue to go above and beyond the call of duty every day. Also our students have a great focus on their achievement and are encouraged to be the best they can be at all times. Teacher morale has suffered at times due to the lack of compensation; however, most understand that we as a board are committed to do all we possibly can in the face of tough economic situations. Again, our teachers go above and beyond every day even in the midst of discouragement.
We are constantly looking at the conditions of our schools and are attempting to keep them in excellent shape. We have and are in the process of replacing roofs on several schools. The condition of our schools is excellent overall and this is largely due to the best maintenance staff.
The teachers are the most important quality of any school system. That is why it is vitally important that we recruit and retain the most qualified individuals for each and every position. It is also imperative that we listen to the teachers who are on the front lines every day to see what changes might be necessary for more effective education to occur. Technology has become increasingly more important on a daily basis, which is why we are committed to providing schools which are equipped with the latest technological tools. Also, providing a safe and secure environment for learning to take place has been and will most definitely continue to be a top priority.
