Occupation/current position City Council Member - District 1
While I am proud of the foundation that my team and I have laid while serving as the first District Council member of District 1, there is still very much more that is still unfinished. I am the only member of the Detroit City Council that hosts at least three community meetings a month. This allows me to stay engaged with my constituents and informed on the issues that matter to them. I also created the Di$cover D1 small business initiative that provides exposure and support to the hundreds of businesses located in D1. DiscoverD1.com is Detroit's only comprehensive small business directory directory. I and also the founder and Chair of the Task Force on Black Male engagement which works at encouraging our youth. During my tenure in office I have learned that while I will never please everyone, I always make sure that my votes have the best interest of Detroit's at heart.
If re-elected I will continue to drive economic development in District 1 by highlighting and supporting our small businesses as this increases opportunity for employment, exposure of amenities in one’s neighborhood and creates a sense of anticipation/excitement for other businesses/entrepreneurs seeking an area in the “neighborhood” where its residents shop locally. I also plan to ensure that the City stays financially stable. This is important because... a.) It allows us to increase the city services that aim to improve the quality of life for residents as well as b.) prevents any ongoing intrusion by the State’s Financial Review Commission thus providing local sovereignty in the final decision making of elected officials on behalf of Detroiters. Additionally, I will continue to work with state legislators to solve this nagging issue of high auto insurance for Detroiters.
