Experience (300 characters max) Retired Teacher - 31 years Retired Volunteer Firefighter - 25 years Forest Crew Supervisor for Department of Natural Resources - 2 years Volunteer Coordinator for Clallam County Fire District #3 - 4.5 years Current Fire Commissioner for CCFD#3 - 1 year
I became a commissioner because I believe in community service. I was appointed as the interim Fire Commissioner upon the retirement of Richard Houts in June 2016, and accepted that position because I have a strong drive to make our community a better place. I’m retired, with 25 years’ experience in fire service and 31 years as a public school teacher, and I feel I possess a unique perspective, skills, and knowledge that I can contribute to my community.
A. Providing a high level of quality service to the community while maintaining fiscal responsibility B. Creating a plan for our fire district that will take us into the future C. Developing a strong community education program to inform and prepare our citizens in the areas of prevention, disaster preparedness and safety.
Maintaining the highest possible level of fire protection and emergency services as our district’s needs grow is our biggest challenge. The district’s 911 responses have grown by 280% since 1995. As the number of calls increased, our fire district had to increase staffing, facilities and services. The response staff consisted of 15 members in 1995. Today we have 34 career staff and over 60 volunteers that provide for our community. In addition to the main station on Fifth Avenue, we now maintain manned stations in Carlsborg and Blyn, plus 4 volunteer stations. As the call rate increases, the distric is challenged to respond efficiently, with the best trained personnel available. As commissioner, I am committed to maintaining a high level of service. To do that, we must provide our staff with the best training and equipment. I see the commissioner’s role as this: Develop long range plans, budget carefully, and promote excellence and leadership that will reflect through our ranks
In my 25 years in the fire service in both Jefferson and Clallam Counties, I had been promoted the rank of Captain. I sent more than 20 of those years as an instructor for fire training. I was also actively involved with wildland fire team for 16 years. I have fought wildfires from the Canadian to the Mexican borders. I am an excellent communicator with the ability to work with all people. As a former Volunteer Coordinator, I was able to work successfully with all the volunteer firefighters and EMTs, career staff and administrative staff. I pride myself in this ability. I consider myself a visionary. I find it stimulating to plan for the future as we are challenged with a growing demand. Having lived in the Sequim Valley for over 30 years, I have an understanding of the community and its needs. As an educator as well as a volunteer firefighter, I have worked with many in this community to make this a better place to live. I will continue doing that as a fire commissioner.
