Biographical Information

Please provide biographical information and explain why you are running for City office and relevant qualities and skills you would bring to the position.

What are the top 3 Priority Issues that the city should address and what actions would you take regarding each of them?

I am running for City Council to have a positive impact on the city’s financial situation, as well as a positive impact on the services residents receive, and infrastructure such as the downtown area. As a resident and property owner in South Lyon I am motivated to work to keep and make South Lyon a desirable place to live and patronize.

1. Fiscal Responsibility: Require fiscal responsibility rather than tax increases to solve budgetary issues. Continuing to raise taxes and thus the burden on homeowners, is not the solution to budgetary shortfalls, lack of budget controls, and smart spending practices. Taxpayers funds should be treated with the utmost respect and responsibility.

2. City Infrastructure Needs & Downtown District Encourage development of Volunteer Park, playgrounds, and sidewalk connectivity by pursuing grants and private funding, as well as department funding. Surrounding communities are improving their walking trails which build value in their community through grants. We have a great Rail Trail system and as a community we could benefit from pursuing these types of funds for improvements and maintenance. We have a growing Downtown and I would be an advocate for new businesses and events that want to call South Lyon home. Many efforts have been made and they need to continue in earnest.

3. Seniors We have a large senior population. I would work to bring improved senior programming and support.
My wife and I have lived in South Lyon since 1987 and raised three children in our downtown home. I have 20 years of City Council experience and I have never been more excited about the position of our downtown and its growing vitality. I've always been deeply engaged in finding the proper balance of government’s role in people’s lives and I have held true to the idea that if you think things could be done better, don’t complain about it, be involved in making things better. My intention is to continue with that work.
Our Downtown is an important key to our future and continuing to support its growth and blend of businesses tops the list of priorities. City Council's role should be to provide an environment for businesses to thrive and encourage under-performing areas to be redeveloped for more business opportunities and additional foot traffic.

Another priority is enhancement of existing parkland and further development of Volunteer Park to help our sports leagues meet their increasing need for ball fields. City Council will need to help solicit sponsors to offset construction costs and work closely with the Parks and Recreation Commission to strategize fund raising events to further help that cause.

And finally, continuing to work on ways to stretch every tax dollar to accomplish as much as possible toward providing the high level of services our residents and businesses throughout the city enjoy.
