Their primary responsibility is to serve as acting Governor if or when the Governor is absent, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to perform their duties. The Lieutenant Governor is automatically a member of the Massachusetts Governor's Council and, when the Governor is absent, the President of the Council. Lieutenant Governor candidates run separately from the Governor in the Massachusetts primary. In the November general election, the Governor and Lieutenant Governor will run together on a joint ticket.
