How does your background and education inform your actions as a judge/justice?

The experiences I gained during my first ten years on the bench have provided the most meaningful education for my work as a judge. Justice requires approaching each case with fairness, respect and patience. I am regularly asked to teach other judges. These opportunities improve my job performance.

My background has taught me that explaining the reasons for my decisions is imperative. Thoughtful explanations demonstrate preparation, diligence, and integrity, but they also acknowledge the very real human impact of judicial rulings.

Prior to becoming a judge, I practiced law in our communities in the same areas of law that I now preside over. The lessons I learned while representing clients continue to inform my actions.

How do you balance the need for justice with the rights of the accused in a case?

I utilize 4 principles:

1) To hear courteously;

2) To answer wisely;

3) To consider soberly;

4) And to decide impartially.

I strive to put these principles into practice by emphasizing procedural justice:

Voice – Everyone is given an opportunity to be heard and to tell their side of the story.

Neutrality – My decisions are guided by the law and the facts presented, with transparent, impartial reasoning.

Respect – While I carefully scrutinize arguments, evidence, and allegations, I endeavor to treat every person who appears before the court with dignity, fairness, and compassion.

Trustworthiness – Those affected by my decisions should understand that they were reached thoughtfully, fairly, and with a sincere commitment to justice.
