What should be the county’s top budget priorities, and why?

One is budgeting for future needs which would include planning for changes in revenue, changes in population, and the ageing of bridges, roads, and structures. Also, infrastructure maintenance which includes roads, parks, public buildings, fire, ambulance, and medical services, and law enforcement. I think infrastructure maintenance and improvement are key to maintaining and improving the quality of life in Pershing County which I think will help in retaining current residents and attracting new residents to make Pershing County their home. Pershing County lacks many natural features and amenities that can be found in other places and people like, so we have to look for other ways to make Pershing County a nice and happy place to be.

What policies or initiatives, if any, would you support to address housing affordability in the county?

I would support policies to streamline and reduce the cost of housing construction and incentives for contractors to set up shop in Pershing County. I would not support lowering standards with regard to quality of construction and requirements for quality of life elements such as parking, transportation, and environmental protection. I also think we could benefit from self-help programs such as Habitat for Humanity and partnering with local land owners who have or are considering housing development. These partnerships would help streamline the development process, foster the economy of scale, and help coordinate transportation and provision of services such a education, utilities, and emergency response.

What policies or initiatives, if any, would you support to improve public safety in the county?

I would support the volunteer fire and ambulance departments in the county by providing them with the buildings, equipment, and training they need to sustain their services. I would also support incentives to help retain law enforcement personnel which might include wages, benefits, and educational supports.
