Why are you running for Knoxville City Council?

Knoxville is growing, and there is no stop button. I am running to be a steward of positive growth in Knoxville.

In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges facing the City of Knoxville at this time?

-A lack of housing stock and increasing cost of housing -Increasing congestion and lack of safety on our roads -Unprotected bike lanes -Long stretches where children walk to school without sidewalks -Improving but still unreliable public transportation -A daily average of 3,000 unhoused Knoxvillians

What will you do to positively impact transportation for the people of Knoxville?

I believe transportation is a multi-faceted endeavor.

As it involves the automobile and our surface streets, I support traffic calming strategies that lower speeds while at the same time reducing congestion.

I will press to provide KAT with the resources required to improve the reliability and experience of our public transportation system.

I believe we can build truly protected bike lanes that make Knoxville safer and more esthetically pleasing.

I believe every school should be surrounded by sidewalks so that children can get to school safely.

I believe there are areas where we can build Complete Streets, which include traffic lanes for private cars and public transport, protected bike lanes, and sidewalks for pedestrians.

What is your opinion about the City of Knoxville’s proposed 0.5% sales tax increase?

In Tennessee we have two primary mechanisms to support the common contract we share as its citizens. One is property taxes, the other a sales tax. In general I support the sales tax increase.

I believe that the tremendous growth we are experiencing requires the infrastructure to support it. I also believe it requires resources to make sure that all of Knoxville's citizens experience housing we can afford and the support structures that comprise healthy, happy cities.

That said, this money can be spent poorly. Let's not allow that to happen.

What are your views on Knoxville’s current housing strategy, and do you think any changes to that strategy are needed?

I am excited about our Middle Housing initiatives. I think our recently adopted single-stair egress typology for multi-family housing has promise. I would love to explore policy changes including minimum lot sizes, parking requirements, and the building codes we adopt.

I think there is an opportunity for the city to provide developers with more compelling incentives to increase the amount of workforce housing included in their projects.
