What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?
I’m in my fourth year on the Riverdale School Board and currently serving as Board President. I’ve prioritized steady, effective leadership and fiscal responsibility. While many neighboring districts face deep cuts, Riverdale remains on solid financial ground. During my tenure, I’ve led efforts to restore academic programs, increase enrollment, and strengthen our school community. I bring experience in collaborative strategic planning and community engagement. One of my proudest accomplishments has been working with our Superintendent to extend his contract for three more years—helping build forward momentum, trusted leadership, and lasting progress. This year, Riverdale HS was awarded the #1 Public High School in Oregon on Niche.
What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?
Federal and state education policies—guided by ODE and supported by OSBA—exist to protect students’ rights and ensure access to a high-quality education. As school board leaders, we must comply with these laws thoughtfully and consistently. Students deserve an inclusive environment that supports their academic growth and personal development. In today’s climate, being reactive can lead to polarization and distract from what matters most. I make decisions with care, always prioritizing academic excellence, a sense of belonging, and critical thinking—while also listening to the many voices of our community. School board service is nonpartisan; our focus must stay on students. That requires courage, collaboration, and a long-term view.
How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?
The most urgent and persistent issue has been stabilizing our budget and leadership. It’s taken most of my four-year term to get us to a place of steady progress, and I’m proud of the momentum we’ve built. Now, the focus must be on creating a sustainable, long-term budget that allows our schools to thrive. Rising costs including PERS and the lack of permanent land for our high school continue to present challenges—limiting our ability to improve facilities and attract higher enrollment. I’m also committed to strengthening our grade school, continuing to address learning gaps and bringing back PreKindergarten, which is critical to supporting families and building community. The best student outcomes happen when we think and plan long term.
