There are 197 public school districts in Oregon, each governed by a board of education. School boards set goals, establish policies, oversee the performance of district schools, and negotiate contracts. The state Board of Education sets broader educational policies and standards that local schools are required to follow.Qualifications: Candidate must be a registered voter and a resident of the district for at least 1 year. Employees of the district are not eligible unless employed as a substitute driver. ORS 332.016 and 332.018(2)Term: 4 years
Biographical Information
What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?
I have skills in budgets, operations of large organizations, and in working with unions. As a parent I have experience in school operations, school budgets, and areas where needed services for students are lacking or underfunded.
What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?
There is a need to comply with education instruction hours, standard curriculum for graduation, performance, Human Resources and staffing. The district can work to influence what the policies are but do need to follow them.
How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?
The most urgent issue is funding so that students get a well rounded curriculum and graduate college or career ready. We will need to look at new ways to ensure that the funds become available to the districts, especially in a small district like Parkrose. It may be necessary for several smaller districts to combine in order to provide the curriculum and educational days our students deserve.
