What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?
My undergraduate degree is in computer programming and an M.B.A. in Healthcare Finance. I have played and worked in so many different roles along this journey that I can adapt to any situation and understand all the different perspectives involved. Have lived through times of abundance and times of very little money and I empathize with families who are struggling to educate their children and put healthy food on the table. Worked in many restaurants as a youngster, started programming for a marketing company while simultaneously working as a stagehand doing audio and video production for national acts like Bruce Hornsby, and Susan Tedeschi. I have been a restaurant owner, therapist, coach, taxi driver, general repairman, author & more.
What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?
As a law abiding citizen it has never been a question for me. I realize we are entering a new era of education with federal funding disappearing and absurd new political pressures every day on educational institutions. Lawlessness abounds and it seems that darkness is upon us. That is why i have decided to get involved because I want to be a ray of sunshine in that darkness.
I stand by the Constitution of the United States of America and I will uphold the laws and fight for truth and justice.
How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?
We need to create a comfortable space for learning so that children who are trying to learn can do so. A lot of time is spent dealing with the same 3 or 4 problem students in every class that won't listen or sit down and there is really no deterrent. If you send them to the office, they are back in 20 minutes. Behavioral issues in the classroom create constant disruptions that consume so much learning time and also encourage other children to join in and act out.
Good communication between administrators, teachers and parents is key. Excessive sugar and processed food is definitely a factor and I would like to see healthier options, more use of local goods instead of prepared entrees. We can all agree that our children are worth it!
