There are 197 public school districts in Oregon, each governed by a board of education. School boards set goals, establish policies, oversee the performance of district schools, and negotiate contracts. The state Board of Education sets broader educational policies and standards that local schools are required to follow.Qualifications: Candidate must be a registered voter and a resident of the district for at least 1 year. What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?

I am currently serving on the Civil Service Board for South Lane County Fire and Rescue. I have over 15 years serving as a union representative and feel my skills of communication and willingness to work together for a common good will be of great benefit serving in this role.

What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?

I feel as a board member it is my job to see if the policies align with the goal of the district, furthering education and providing an environment where every student can succeed.

How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?

As a district we need to explore and implement ways to improve our tests scores as our number one priority. The decline of attendance, especially in the higher grades also needs to be addressed.
