School boards set goals, establish policies, oversee the performance of district schools, and negotiate contracts. The state Board of Education sets broader educational policies and standards that local schools are required to follow.Qualifications: Candidate must be a registered voter and a resident of the district for at least 1 year. Your Experience/Qualifications
As a lifelong resident, and former South Lane educator, I have unique qualifications that would strengthen and enrich the board. I have been involved with the school district on multiple levels, as a student I attended South Lane schools. As a 30 plus year educator, I have seen the district from the “inside", and as the parent of a South Lane student, I saw the quality of education students receive.

As a lifelong resident, and former educator, I have unique qualifications that would strengthen and enrich the board.
I have been involved with the school district on multiple levels…
As a student, I attended South Lane schools from first through twelfth grade.
As an educator I saw the district from the “inside”, and I learned how important a school board can be in shaping a communities’ opinions about education. It’s important to have a board that believes in a quality public education for all students, regardless of their zip code.
I have also collaborated with the district as a union leader and activist . I spoke at many school board meetings to ensure that the school board knew the needs and opinions of educators.
What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?
As a school board member one of your obligations is to uphold/comply with state and federal education policies. However; In general, state education policies often take precedence over federal policies, especially in areas of K-12 education. The U.S. Constitution doesn't explicitly grant the federal government authority over education, and the 10th Amendment reserves powers not delegated to the federal government to the states.
How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?
I know that issues can be resolved by a board that is willing to tackle them. I am a strong believer in the “collective”, and that we are stronger together than we are alone. In addressing issues we need to set aside any political party bias we may have, and remember we hold non partisan positions. “Children Come First” in SLSD must be more than a cute saying. It has to be the guiding principle the board uses in making all decisions. I will commit to continually reminding myself, as well as my fellow board members of this mission.
