What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?
As an incumbent, I have been on the school board for two years. In that time, I have actively participated in policy review, curriculum selection, and budget approval. Additionally, as a tribal member, I have worked on The Klamath Tribes Education and Senate Bill 13 Committees, both of which are directly focused on K-12 education.
School board directors are responsible for approving curriculum, hiring/supervising the superintendent, the budget, and policies. In my roles as a Social Responsibility & Belonging Advisor and Program Development Manager, I have collaborated with other departments and individuals, created and maintained budgets, overseen large-scale projects, developed curriculum, supervised employees, and developed policy.
What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?
Not only is it our legal duty to comply with federal and state education policies, our funding depends upon it. It is our responsibility to adhere to state and federal education policies in a way that makes sense for our community and provides the best outcomes for every child in our district.
How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?
The most urgent matters in our schools today are mental health, early reading literacy, and student outcomes. Addressing the mental health of our students may not fall in the traditional pervue of schools' responsibilities, we must address it because it impacts so many students' ability to learn. We need to allocate resources to address it. The school district is focused on research-based reading curriculum for our students, ensuring that they are catching up to grade-level reading. This mastery is crucial to success in all other subjects. We need to continue to look at disaggregated data to determine which students have barriers and need additional resources to achieve successful outcomes and provide what they need.
