What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?
I have skills in teaching, leadership, listening, negotiating, writing, and speaking. My career in the Seaside School District allows me to bring the perspective of an educator to the Board. My son attended Seaside Schools K-12 and took advantage of offerings and experiences to obtain a quality education. That allows me to bring the perspective of a parent. I want a quality opportunity for all students. I am proud to have been endorsed by the Seaside Education Association. I also have prior governmental experience. I was a Gearhart City Councilor. I was a Clatsop County Planning Commission Member and Chair.
What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?
School Districts have a legal obligation to comply with both federal and state education policies. There are many key policies.
Federal Ones Include:
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, 504, Title IX, Civil Rights, Family Rights, Parental Rights, Every Student Succeeds Act.
State Obligations Include:
Laws and regulations covering areas such as curriculum, funding, teacher qualifications, special education, student assessment, and student discipline.
How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?
The cuts to the Federal Department of Education may have impacts on our local District and we must be vigilant to be up to speed to address impacts if they occur.
There have been recent concerns about curriculum choices and the District needs to ensure transparency so that parents can make proactive choices in the best interest of their children. The District should, and does in many ways, support a strong family engagement model.
The District needs to continue expanding the partnership with Clatsop Community College.
The District would benefit many students by expanding Vocational opportunities.
