There are 197 public school districts in Oregon, each governed by a board of education. School boards set goals, establish policies, oversee the performance of district schools, and negotiate contracts. The state Board of Education sets broader educational policies and standards that local schools are required to follow.Qualifications: Candidate must be a registered voter and a resident of the district for at least 1 year. Employees of the district are not eligible unless employed as a substitute driver. ORS 332.016 and 332.018(2)Term: 4 years

What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?

As a mom of three boys in the Astoria School District, I've sat in classrooms, cheered from the sidelines, and supported them through every step of their education. I know the hopes and worries parents carry. I’m running for Position 4 because I want every child to feel seen, supported, and inspired at school. I serve as Deputy Director at The Harbor, supporting survivors and families in crisis, and previously served six years on the ASD Budget Committee. These roles have deepened my belief that schools must work for all families. I’ll bring heart, honesty, and a parent’s voice to every decision.

What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?

The District has a responsibility to follow all federal and state education laws, including those that ensure student safety, access, equity, and quality instruction. While I’m not an expert in education policy, I understand that compliance is essential for funding, accountability, and protecting students’ rights. As a board member, I would take this responsibility seriously, asking questions, seeking guidance from staff and experts, and always keeping students’ best interests at the center of every decision.

How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?

As a member of the ASD Budget Committee for the past six years, I’ve seen firsthand the urgent need for more funding. We are in a time when vital programs that support our children are being cut, and it’s heartbreaking to see the impact on students and staff. It’s more important than ever to find creative, sustainable solutions to the funding challenges we face. If elected, I will advocate tirelessly for our schools, ensuring that every dollar spent is making a real difference for our students, teachers, and families. Our children’s future deserves that commitment.

What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?

I will bring a unique perspective and a strong skill set to our district. My experience in the district in various roles such as special education, transportation, food service, coaching, and supporting 9th-grade students as an on track coach has prepared me to understand the daily operations and needs of our students, staff, and administration.

My current role as the Recreation Manager,I manage a large public budget, navigating challenges and prioritizing funds to best serve our community. I have experience negotiating contracts that will help educators receive fair wages while allowing the district to provide realistic pay increases.

What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?

Districts and school board members must comply with state and federal education policies and laws.

How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?

Our district is facing significant budget challenges that we must address urgently. The question isn't simply whether we should support students or make informed decisions; it's how we can achieve these goals effectively. As a school board member, We will face tough decisions about resource allocation, but I will strive to use our funds effectively and I believe my experience will allow me to lead creative ideas for our funding challenges. If elected I am ready to find solutions for the district to save not cut valuable resources that students, staff, and families rely on.

What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?

Being a parent of a neurodivergent child (let alone two!) usually means more involvement than most within the school district- IEP/504 meetings, communicating with my child’s teachers and staff members, as well as administrators.

Through my involvement in Parents Club, I’ve had the pleasure of being more involved in engagement activities for students and appreciation activities for teachers, staff, and administrators.

I’ve been able to witness the hard work each person at each school pours into helping students feel safe, heard, understood, and ready to learn. It’s inspiring and it compels me to serve in ways that can benefit as many folks as possible.

What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?

Our school district has a legal obligation to comply with federal and state education policies. Many of those policies are tied to our district's ability to be allocated funds, resources, or the ability to apply for programs that could offer additional funding or even reprieve from expenses.

Failure to comply with these policies could be detrimental to the district's budget, employee pay and benefits, and ultimately, student experience.

How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?

Currently enrollment is at a historic low. While this is beneficial when it comes to class sizes and being able to keep them small, it does bring forth a challenge when it comes to our budget.

The funding our district received during covid has ended, which adds to the overall challenge when it comes to making things work within the budget our district has planned.

As a business owner, I'm accustomed to being "scrappy" and finding ways to make my own budget work or even looking for alternate solutions. I plan to work within the rules of a school board member (if elected) to explore other resources to supplement our budget.
