What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?
As a mother of two children who attended and graduated from public schools, I bring a deep understanding and appreciation of the public education system. My educational background and professional experience have equipped me with a strong understanding of budgets and the importance of maintaining fiduciary responsibility when it comes to spending taxpayer dollars. In addition, my four years of service of the school board have given me valuable insight into the board's operations and a broader perspective on the needs and concerns of all stakeholders-students, parents, staff and the community.
What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?
My understanding is that the district is legally and ethically obligated to comply with all legally binding federal and state policies to ensure equitable access to quality education for all students.
In the recent months, several executive orders have had implication for public education, such as policies related to Title IX guidance and policies related to immigration enforcement. Our board and District administration took steps to ensure that all students felt safe and supported, regardless of their immigration status. We worked with legal experts and advocacy groups to better understand our obligations and reinforced our commitment to providing a safe, inclusive, and equitable learning environment for every student.
How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?
Providing a high-quality education in a safe, inclusive environment is a top priority. Recent initiatives-like multi-tiered support systems, universal screeners, and a new ELA curriculum grounded in the Science of Reading-must be implemented with fidelity. We must support teachers, monitor progress and ensure all students thrive. We must be willing to make thoughtful adjustments when needed to ensure these strategies truly benefit every learner.
Equally important is fostering a culture free from bullying where every child feels safe and valued. Community engagement and transparent communication are key, and I will continue advocating for the funding our schools need to support academic success and student well-being.
