Special districts in Oregon are formed to provide specific local government needs. They are created by a vote of the people in the local area being served. Examples include people’s utility districts, library districts, water districts, fire protection districts, and more. They are governed by a board of directors, which is responsible for management and financial accountability. Special districts are empowered to levy any necessary taxes and fees to fulfill their mandate. Board members are not paid but may receive a per diem reimbursement.Transportation district boards are responsible for funding and developing transit systems that address the transportation needs of the residents in their service area.Qualifications: If the district has a supporting ordinance, employees of the district are not eligible. What skills and experience, including prior board experience, would you bring to this position?
A voice for people who depend on public transit
I'm one of the 1 in 10 Americans who never or rarely drive a car. My husband does not drive either, and with a child in kindergarten, we are a family that depends on public transit.
I'm excited to bring my experience as a long-time user of public transportation to my role as a board member.
What do you see as the current gaps in transportation service in the District?
Medford enjoys the most coverage, and Ashland is improving, but smaller and more remote communities are under-served. Given the uncertainty in the current federal environment, it will be important for RVTD to prioritize fiscal caution with growth aimed at the areas that will be most impacted by change.
What should the District be doing to ensure compliance with public records and public input laws?
Maintain transparent and well organized structures for creating and sharing transcripts and agendas as well as using a wide variety of channels to communicate with the public. RVTD does a great job of being present and visible to the community, and should continue in that spirit.
