What skills and experience do you bring to school board service?
My Midwestern family at one time had nine teachers and a school board member. My sons graduated from Phoenix-Talent schools and I've substituted and volunteered in schools and community positions. During turbulent and uncertain times, kids and teachers need an advocate for equitable educational opportunities for all while collaborating with community to balance the tightening budget!
What is your understanding of the District’s obligations to comply with federal and state education policies?
Having been out of teaching for many years there will be a learning curve to acquaint myself with rapidly changing current policy and budget restraints. My listening and collaborative skills will be an asset to reaching concensus.
How would you address the issues facing the District’s schools that you consider the most urgent?
I would support solutions to continue classes and programs with lower enrollments as in special education, arts, music, theatre, and foreign languages. I would oppose the trend toward vouchers for private education coming from public education budgets. I would work toward free or low cost healthy meals for students in need and stipends and reduced fees for extracurricular activities currently on a pay to play status.
