What do you believe is the biggest challenge currently impacting public education?

CARELOCK CARES Cultivating Excellence in Education Advocating for Equity across all our schools Respecting and Supporting our Educators Empowering Families- strengthen partnership b/n home & school Strengthening safety ensuring schools are safe

What do you believe the district should do to improve safety for students and teachers in public schools?

Focus on Mental Health Iniatives to address unwanted, unproductive behavior in students.

I would like to obtain teacher feedback on what they would like to see happen in the schools to ensure their safety.

How much control should the State Department of Education have over a well-performing district?

If a District is performing above state standards then I feel the local Board should be more of the decision maker in decisions. If a District is below the standard, then the State Dept of Education should supply more resources/aids to address the teacher and parental concerns to be sure each child is getting their needs met.

What do you believe is the biggest challenge currently impacting public education?

One of the biggest challenges is finding quality teachers. There are not enough students choosing to go into the teaching profession. The biggest reason that students aren't choosing the teaching profession is that they see how teachers are treated.

Political extremism from both parties pulling at public education has teachers no longer feeling respected and supported. Teachers are realizing that they can make more money and be under less pressure by leaving the profession for other careers.

What do you believe the district should do to improve safety for students and teachers in public schools?

Since I have been on the board, safety and security has been a top priority in our district. We have added mental health professionals to all of our schools. We remodeled all of our school entry ways to make them secure. And we have added security officers in all of our schools.

We need to do more to decrease bullying in schools. Teachers need to be supported when there are discipline issues. If a student is disrupting a class or bullying other students, staff and administrators need to try to work with that student and their family to find solutions. Sometimes that solution might be to remove them from the class or school. We need to offer more seats in our virtual and alternative programs for these students.

How much control should the State Department of Education have over a well-performing district?

There needs to be standards across all of SC schools. But districts, especially well-performing ones, need to have more control over their policies and decisions. For example, school start dates shouldn't be decided for all districts based on the needs of the coastal communities. Districts know the needs of their students and communities.
