What do you believe is the biggest challenge currently impacting public education?
Our students are exiting school unprepared for life. This can be addressed through improving interpersonal communication, emphasizing financial literacy, instilling discipline, and enforcing respectful behavior for all.
What do you believe the district should do to improve safety for students and teachers in public schools?
An SRO should be mandatory at all public schools. Safety features, such as classroom card swipe entries, should be available in all schools.
I plan on implementing a program to engage our local retired veterans who will be trained to assist our SRO’s while also serving as mentors to our students.
We must also instill programs to teach students how to resolve conflicts diplomatically as opposed to resorting to violence.
How much control should the State Department of Education have over a well-performing district?
The State Department should provide guidelines for each local district while allowing them to perform and adapt to what helps their students succeed. Each school district is unique. Local superintendents and administration should be allowed the freedom to act as the CEO of their district to provide educational opportunities that are best suited for their area.
