1. What do you hope to accomplish if elected?
I hope to continue serving as an effective Senator and member of the Committees on which I serve: Local Government, Agriculture, and Natural Resources. I have excellent working relationships with my colleagues in the Senate and with House members as well. I have worked collaboratively with my fellow legislators to fine-tune legislation to fix problems I spotted in the drafting stage.
I want to continue being an effective advocate for Idaho's essential public education system. I want to continue being effective at working with colleagues and stakeholders in improving and adjusting proposed legislation, and to continue to focus on practical legislative solutions while setting aside divisive partisanship, to better accomplish our goals.
2. What experience has prepared you for this office?
I've been a practicing attorney for almost 6 years now, representing local governments and prosecuting criminal cases for cities. My experience in the local government trenches, at city council and board meetings in cities across this state, as well as in the courtroom in front of judges almost daily, gives me a unique perspective when I read and evaluate proposed legislation. I also have practical experience growing up on a rural ranch in a small community and have been an educational innovator in bringing unique education opportunities to the school district in my home city. My 21 years of army service and as an enlisted leader during wartime also gives me a unique perspective when looking for solutions to difficult problems.
3 What do you see as the most significant challenges Idaho faces that you might be able to address in this position?
Idaho faces critical funding decisions for education, as well as an ever-increasing medicaid budget. Tax credits, while a tempting approach to funding expanded educational opportunities, have the potential to wreak havoc on a delicately balanced budget. Water issues continue to arise, particularly in arid areas facing increasing growth and demand for water from a shrinking aquifer.
4. Would you support legislation to remove criminal liability for physicians and pregnant women experiencing life threatening pregnancy complications and allow for medical and family decisions regarding continuation of that pregnancy? Please explain your response.
Yes. We continue to see tragic instances where critical lifesaving care for women is delayed or denied because the medical professionals entrusted with their care must now weigh the potential for criminal and civil penalties if non-medical prosecutors or other attorneys choose to pursue actions under existing law. Furthering the chaos is a letter written by Attorney General Labrador, now the subject of litigation, expressing an opinion that doctors in Idaho could face prosecution even for referring a patient out of state for care prohibited in Idaho. During this continuing litigation, the Attorney General has consistently refused to issue a new opinion disavowing that position, perpetuating the legal uncertainty for Idaho's doctors.
5. Is there anything else you would like to tell the voters?
I'm honored to serve as a State Senator for District 8, the largest most beautiful legislative district in the State. Our citizens want legislators who will get our budget balanced, protect our schools, protect our economy, lower taxes, and keep Idahoans safe from the scourge of illicit drug trafficking. I've been able to work effectively with my colleagues to do those things, and I'm asking for your support to give me another two years of delivering real, practical results for Idahoans.
