1. What do you hope to accomplish if elected?

As an elected public servant representing the people in District 4, Seat B in the House of Representatives of the Idaho Legislature, I would carry out the various legislative responsibilities. These include the voting on public policy for the state, levying taxes, appropriating public funds, and overseeing the administration of state agencies. Important attributes and obligations in representing the people would also include building relationships and trust, listening and demonstrating respect as well as following the laws, the Legislature’s Mission and Idaho’s Constitution.

2. What experience has prepared you for this office?

I’ve championed education, community, and public service ranging from social justice and human rights causes to promoting school levies, initiatives and legislative and judiciary candidates. I’ve tirelessly advocated for children, families, and public education, holding leadership positions on school committees and professional associations. My involvement in hosting student exchange programs and participating in community orchestras have fostered understanding and unity among diverse groups. I actively participate and serve on the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber Education Committee. This provides opportunities to work collaboratively with business and education. Precinct captain has deepened my understanding of citizen needs in community.

3. What do you see as the most significant challenges Idaho faces that you might be able to address in this position?

Thriving public schools ensure equal opportunity for every child. Public funds should be invested in our public schools to guarantee the best education for our children. Idaho is funding a public education system built on quicksand instead of a strong brick and mortar foundation. Public schools are being depleted of funds due to a funding model dependent on a student’s daily attendance instead of a more reasonable average school enrollment. The lack of funding directly impacts our K-12 children with the necessary resources needed to support their learning, development and future plans. Idaho's Constitution establishes it is the duty to thorough education system. Investing in public education is strength for all Idaho's citizens.

4. Would you support legislation to remove criminal liability for physicians and pregnant women experiencing life threatening pregnancy complications and allow for medical and family decisions regarding continuation of that pregnancy. Please explain your response.

Yes, I would support legislation to remove criminal liability for physicians and pregnant women experiencing life threatening pregnancy complications. Abortion is often medically necessary when certain conditions develop. By threatening doctors with prison time for those cases, they are forcing them to commit medical malpractice. In addition, this legislation has lost a quarter of its ob-gyns and 55% of its high-risk pregnancy specialists because they don’t want to have to choose between committing malpractice and prison. Of deep concern, Idaho’s ban has no health exception, and puts Idaho women in danger if they develop complications during pregnancy. Women’s health ~ their lives, their safety are to be respected and valued.

5. What else would you like to tell the voters?

At the heart of my decision to run for public office exists a profound commitment to the things that bind us together as a community. I firmly believe that our strength in building community in Idaho hinges on how well we live, work, learn and play together. We shape our future when all individuals are engaged, active and respected. I will promote, advocate and support for keeping communities safe and healthy, protecting individual rights, providing and investing in quality public education, protecting and preserving Idaho’s natural beauty and investing in businesses and jobs so both younger individuals, families and people in retirement can thrive. I ask for your vote and support. Vote Paula Marano in the November elections.
