1. What do you hope to accomplish if elected?
I will listen to you and be a strong supporter in the leisure of the people in rural areas. While these people want their freedom and independence, they also believe in community and want good basic services. These include good schools, good road, access to public land for hunting fishing and recreation, good emergency services and medical services, etc. I will be a much different senator than the incumbent who has a history of unethical behavior and tends to support extreme positions and vote against the needs of the people of district 2. I will join with Republicans and Democrats to vote in the interests of people the district, not political organizations.
2. What experience has prepared you for this office?
I have a long history of community involvement. I have been on two school boards in Coeur d’Alene and Harrison. I have been appointed by both Republican and Democratic governors to state boards and committees. I have been very active in the community in a number of organizations over the years. These include the Friends of Head Start and organizations supportive of child abuse prevention. I owned a small business in Coeur d’Alene for many years. I know it is like to run a business and I would be a strong supporter of economic development, particularly for small businesses in rural district 2 . 3 What do you see as the most significant challenges Idaho faces that you might be able to address in this position?
There’s much that needs to be done in Idaho. The extremist positions of the majority party on many issues has caused Idaho to be lacking in important public services, such as public education, medical and mental healthcare, child welfare service, decent roads, economic development in rural areas, and many others. North Idaho, in particular has been plagued in my opinion, with political extremism, including racism. The incumbent in this position considers himself to be a conservative, but he repeatedly votes against basic services for the people and District 2. I can work to help change the perception of political extremism in North Idaho by being a moderate and reasonable voice in the state senate
4. Would you support legislation to remove criminal liability for physicians and pregnant women experiencing life threatening pregnancy complications and allow for medical and family decisions regarding continuation of that pregnancy? Please explain your response.
Yes, absolutely. I feel that Idaho has an extreme anti-abortion position and I do not support it. I would work to change that as best I could in the legislature. I would recommend abortion be put up to a public vote statewide. While my religious believes do not support abortion, I also strongly support the right of women and their doctors to make the determination about abortion and other healthcare issues involving women. I trust women to make these decisions far more than I trust politicians in Boise. I don’t think the current law reflects the real will of the majority of citizens in Idaho with regards to abortion and I think it should be left up to the voters, which I believe will change Idaho’s extreme anti-abortion law.
5. Is there anything else you would like to tell the voters?
After the primary election, if not before, I will have a website and Facebook page with my background and positions on all the important issues spelled out in detail. I’m also willing to answer questions from citizens, particularly in district 2. I think when people get to know my positions on issues and see my background of years of public service, and private service (I owned a mental health center), they will see that I much better represent their needs than the incumbent. I’ve lived in Idaho most of my adult life and I believe I have a good understanding of what most believe particularly in rural areas. I have shown an ability to work in a bi-partisan fashion. I would like the chance to represent the good citizens of district 2.
