Brown County School Referendum Public Question Choose 1

Shall Brown County Schools increase property taxes paid to the school corporation by homeowners and businesses for eight (8) years immediately following the holding of the referendum for the purpose of funding the Taxpayer Investment Plan which will include providing for teacher and staff salaries, benefits and programs and funding the Career Resource Center? If this public question is approved by the voters, the average property tax paid to the school corporation per year on a residence would increase by 28.16% and the average property tax paid to the schools per year on a business property would increase by 17.28%. The most recent property tax referendum proposed by the school corporation was held in November 2022 and failed.

What does a "Yes" vote mean? What does a "No" vote mean?

A 'YES' vote approves funding for the schools through a 10 cent tax per $100 assessed property value (a 2 cent increase over the 2016 referendum). Funds will be used to increase teacher and staff salaries to compete with neighbor counties to improve retention; increase support for Special Ed, Career and Technical Education and Eagle Manufacturing, Theater, Art, Work-Based learning and Adult Education. What does a "Yes" vote mean? What does a "No" vote mean?

A "NO" vote means Brown County Schools lose about $1.2 million for programs and salaries when the 2016 school levy ends. If the referendum fails, Brown County Schools will be forced to cut expenditures. Potential changes include: increase class sizes, eliminate teaching positions and other educational options. The Brown County Career Resource Center, Business and Entrepreneurship, elementary science programs, programs in theater, art, music and extracurricular activities will face cuts or elimination.
