What has inspired you to run for this office?

My inspiration in running for the Rhinelander School Board is the same as when I was first elected to the board back in 2017, my children. I have no way to tell if my children will take all AP classes or be two grade levels behind in reading, will be involved in football or the drama department, or will work a part-time job during the school year or volunteer regularly. I will ensure that all decisions that I make as a School Board member will have the best interest of EVERY student, teacher, and community member in mind. I want to have a positive impact on all the current and future students in the district and ensure that they will be well-prepared for their future lives.

What qualifications and experiences do you have that prepare you for the local Board of Education?

I have served two terms on the Rhinelander School Board and have learned a lot about how the board and district function. I will continue to work with the other members of the board and the district employees to continue moving the district forward! I have also attended the state education convention each of the past three years, where I was able to interact with board members and educators from around the state. Lastly, I have been a member of the State Superintendent's Reading Advisory Council since its inception in 2022, which focuses on reading advancement and improvement in the pre-kindergarten through 2nd grade levels. I believe that these experiences have given me a better understanding of how the educational process works.

What should be the priorities for your district? Please explain.

o Recruitment and retention: I believe that the best way to support our students is through the supporting of our teachers, specifically in ensuring that they are adequately paid for their work. In this way, we will reduce turnover and keep our highly-skilled employees. We need to continue to provide salary increases that are at or above inflation.

o Flexibility: Not everyone learns the same way or at the same speed. Students should be able to work at their own pace, utilizing a variety of teaching methods. We also need to allow our teachers to work using methods that highlight their strengths as educators.

o Oversight: Teachers need to be allowed to perform their jobs without too much interference from those who don't know about the educational process. Through my time in the military, I have developed a deep understanding of the chain of command and will ensure a proper bottom-to-top and top-to-bottom flow of information and issues.

Do you have concerns about school funding? Please explain.

I am concerned that the school funding formula hasn't been adjusted in the past 30 years. This has resulted in districts receiving unequal amounts of state funding (Rhinelander for example only receives about 30% of our school funding from the state, while the other 70% is covered by our local taxpayers). We need to keep pushing on our legislature to update the formula and provide for more funding to reduce the burden on our local taxpayers.
