City of West Bend Alderperson District 7 Choose 1

Watch the West Bend Area Chamber of Commerce Candidate Forum recorded on March 20 via the West Bend Community Television on demand website at:tinyurl.com/mrx34xn3 In the City of West Bend there are 8 districts, each represented by an elected alderperson for a 2 year term. The 8 alderpersons make up the Common Council, and each person is assigned to work on various committees, of which there are currently 26. The job of the Common Council is to decide and approve city issues and expenditures. For instance, the County Engineer will bring choices about construction and expenditures. Bids are presented with recommendations, after which the Council will vote its preference. A specific example of this involves the Riverwalk improvements where the Council voted to spend $2 million of ARPA funds on the Riverwalk. The Council also approves or disapproves establishments getting licenses to serve alcohol, they make decisions on controlling the deer in the city, and whether or not people are allowed to have chickens. (We are allowed as long as neighbors are okay with it.) Other committees include downtown business improvements, zoning, housing authority, library board, and tourism, to name a few.

Why do you want to be a City of West Bend Alderperson, and what qualifications and experience make you the best candidate?

I have been the Alderman for this district for the past 6 years and have gained an important understanding of this district's history and concerns...

What are the most important issues facing West Bend and how will you address them?

Roads are always a hot button issue, and the current council has already made great strides in increasing the city's road budget. I intend to continue this trend.

How will you keep your constituents informed of the issues and actions of the City Council?

I have been sending out newsletters bi-yearly since I've been in office. I also have a busy salon in the middle of the district that I use as a bullhorn whenever appropriate.

Why do you want to be a City of West Bend Alderperson, and what qualifications and experience make you the best candidate?

My wife & I have been residents of the 7th District for 30 years and raised our family here. We love our community. As your alderman, I will uphold the constitutional rights of our citizens. I am fiscally conservative. I am opposed to tax increases for funding "shiny object" projects. We must always prioritize "needs" over "wants". One significant need is fixing our deteriorating streets. My opponent ran 6 years ago on the promise to help fix them. It is my opinion that has not happened to an appreciable extent. I intend to refocus city government on this important issue. Also, I disagree with my opponent's intention to run for both county supervisor and alderman simultaneously. I do not consider his strategy to be in the best interest of West Bend citizens. In my view, this is a conflict of interest since he would have taxation authority in two bodies of local government. The vast majority of constituents I've spoken with on the topic (and I've spoken with MANY) agree with me.

What are the most important issues facing West Bend and how will you address them?

Although there are provisions in the capital budget for fixing & maintaining roads for the next several years, at the current pace, we will NEVER catch up (let alone KEEP up) with that need. We must refocus on our streets! I propose we take advantage of shared cost and services with the county. Doing so could potentially free up a significant amount of city tax money that could be redirected towards roads and public safety initiatives, which is particularly important as the city continues to grow.

How will you keep your constituents informed of the issues and actions of the City Council?

I maintain a Facebook site specific to my candidacy that will also become my elected official site should I win this race. This site will provide updates on issues and actions taken by the council and more. Further, I will offer updates through email for my constituents who voluntarily provide email addresses. I believe this is an effective way of staying in touch with those who prefer this form of communication. It is also important to note the city's website provides constituents with a plethora of information about past, present and future projects and events. If I am elected, I will have a dedicated phone number where I will encourage constituents to contact me about any need or concern. I will do my utmost to advocate for the constituents of the 7th District and West Bend as a whole.
