The County Board of Supervisors play a pivotal role in county government across the state. The county board of supervisors approves how tax dollars are spent when they approve the county budget. They also pass county resolutions and ordinances (local laws) and establish programs and public services for the county. Why does this matter? As county policy makers, the county board of supervisors determine what county services and programs get funded and which ones do not. Their decisions impact many issues in the county they serve including: public health, housing, public safety including county jails and juvenile justice services, child welfare services, transportation, planning and zoning, and more. Why do you want to be an Ozaukee County Board Supervisor, and what qualifications and experience make you the best candidate?

I am running to become a Ozaukee County Board Supervisor because I want the voice of the everyday people of our beautiful County to be heard, respected and represented. As a geologist, environmentalist and father of a young family with deep roots here, I have gained a hands-on understanding of the key issues that make–and will keep–Ozaukee so desirable. I have nine years of experience working on the Grafton Planning Commission, 10 years volunteering with the Ulao Creek Partnership and have also served on the Open Spaces Commission for Grafton. So I understand the hard work and the persistent communication it takes to achieve results that our residents and businesses deserve. As a county supervisor, I will bring that kind of can-do, collaborative spirit to the Board.

What are the most important issues facing Ozaukee County and how will you address them?

Ozaukee County is a jewel that is in growing demand. People understandably want to live here to enjoy its natural rural beauty, its high-quality education districts and its safe communities. But preserving our cherished quality of life will only become more and more difficult as development demands increase. As a County Board Supervisor, I will be a relentless advocate for the environment while working for smart development that preserves and enhances the essence of our county. I will work for zoning coordination between our municipalities to facilitate low-impact housing. I will work for the preservation, improvement and expansion of our county parks to alleviate the growing pressures on existing parks like Lions Den while at the same time reducing the demand for larger lots in our more urban communities.

How will you keep your constituents informed of the issues and actions of the County Board?

Two things: First, I will work openly and transparently with ALL constituents. That means open meetings and communication with community groups, businesses, school districts, developers, home owners, farmers. Open, honest, sincere communication begets improved communication with all parties. Second, I will push for the updating and simplification of the Ozaukee County website. Many of the links within the current website are inactive or out-of-date. For example, if you go to the website right now and try to sign up for notifications on County Board business, ultimately land at a dead end. Wrong or missing information leads to distrust and less and less use of this valuable communications tool. It can and should be leveraged to facilitate communication with all constituents about all Ozaukee County business.
