Background: What in your background and experience qualifies you to be a member of the Baltimore City Council?
The citizens of Baltimore should support my campaign for several compelling reasons. My track record speaks volumes about my commitment to building healthy communities as a seasoned Public Health practitioner for the past decade on the Baltimore City Council. With visionary leadership, I've elevated the District and impacted local, state, and federal levels, demonstrating the ability to effect change across platforms- securing more than $600,000 across 25 organizations in District 10.
Crime: What specific plans would you propose to reduce homicides, violent crime, theft and vandalism in Baltimore?
To address Baltimore's crime, a multifaceted approach is crucial. Prioritize enforcement on violent offenses, targeting repeat offenders. Implement early intervention programs for individuals with behavioral health issues, collaborating closely with agencies like Baltimore City Public Schools. Establish a clean-up corps, engaging vandals to restore the communities they damage. This combination of enforcement, prevention, and community involvement can mitigate true community revitalization.
Education: How would you fund public education in Baltimore, while assuring the quality and ongoing structural maintenance of school buildings?
Funding public education in Baltimore can be achieved through a combination of state allocations, local taxes, and federal grants, with a dedicated portion earmarked for infrastructure upkeep. Implementing transparent budgeting, engaging community partnerships, and leveraging innovative financing mechanisms like municipal bonds can ensure sustained quality education and structural maintenance of school buildings, prioritizing the well-being and academic success of students.
Health: What strategies do you have to address continued health disparities in Baltimore? What will you do to make sure that the Health Department has the resources it needs to serve all residents?
To address health disparities in Baltimore, we'll employ a multi-pronged approach: bolstering community health education, expanding access to affordable healthcare, and fostering partnerships with local organizations. Securing funding through grants, advocating for governmental support, and optimizing existing resources are key steps to ensure the Health Department can effectively serve all residents. Accountability measures like oversight hearings & funding shifts ensure funds are impactful.
Climate and Environment As we face climate change and sea level rise, what would be your priorities to increase sustainable practices by the city and to increase the city’s resilience?
In tackling climate change and sea level rise, prioritizing sustainable practices and resilience is crucial. Implementing green infrastructure like rain gardens and permeable pavements can mitigate flooding while enhancing biodiversity. Promoting renewable energy adoption and incentivizing energy-efficient buildings reduces emissions. Investing in community resilience initiatives, like early warning systems and coastal protection measures, fosters preparedness.
Housing: What strategies do you propose to remove or rehabilitate vacant buildings and provide affordable housing through the new inclusionary housing bill and other means?
To address vacant buildings and foster affordable housing, a multifaceted approach is crucial. The inclusionary housing bill can incentivize developers to allocate a portion of units to affordable housing. Additionally, tax credits and grants can support rehabilitation efforts. Collaborating with nonprofits and community land trusts can facilitate ownership transitions, while zoning reforms can encourage mixed-income developments.
Council Size: What are the advantages and disadvantages of reducing the size of the City Council?
Reducing the City Council size may streamline decision-making but risks diluting representation. Advantages include increased efficiency and cost savings. However, fewer councilors may mean less diverse perspectives and reduced responsiveness to constituents' needs. It's crucial to balance efficiency with ensuring adequate representation for all communities.
