Sheryl Cole (Dem)

Biographical Information

Qualifications: What training, experience, and characteristics qualify you for this position?

Before the legislature, Rep. Cole served for 3 terms on the Austin City Council, becoming the first African-American female Mayor Pro Tem. Before this, she was involved in the AISD PTA.

Public Education: What are your top priorities for public education?

Rep. Cole believes that the state must fully fund public education by raising the basic allotment, reforming recapture so school districts like AISD don't have to give so much money back to the state year after year, and ensuring that the state doesn't pass a school voucher program that would greatly harm public schools across Texas.

Abortion: What changes would you support to Texas abortion laws?

Rep. Cole believes that the bare minimum that the State of Texas can do is include exceptions for the abortion ban in Texas such as rape or incest. Each legislative session, Rep. Cole has filed "Rosie's Law" which would add abortion services to Medicaid, and she plans on filing the bill again for the 89th Legislative Session. Rep. Cole believes every woman has a right to bodily autonomy.

Elections: What measures can be taken to protect free and fair access to voting in Texas?

Rep. Cole has long been a champion for expanded voting rights in Texas. She has consistently filed bills related to same-day voter registration, extending the early voting period, codifying late-night voting into law, and so forth. Rep. Cole has been steadfast in this support but also in opposition to any legislation that restricts the right to vote.
