What do you see as the most significant challenges the county may face in the next ten years?

Funding for county government has been and will continue to be a significant challenge for county government. The only revenue the county receives is from ad valorem taxes, so the ever increasing cost of providing funding for all the county departments is challenging. About 61% of the county budget goes to support justice in Nueces County. That includes the jail, sheriff's department, district courts, county court-at-law courts, JP's and Constables. That leaves less that 40% to fund the operations of the other county departments. Commissioner Courts will have to work diligently to make sure funding for county government is focused on what we are constitutionally required to do.

What are your budgeting priorities, and how do you plan to manage the county's finances?

My budgeting priorities will be focused on a balanced budget that, to the best of our ability, focuses on responsible funding for county departments. I have always and will continue to take a very conservative approach to spending taxpayer's money.
