Why are you running for office?

I support safe students, academic excellence, and parent and community values, and want to continue working to ensure they are strong in Sheboygan Falls schools. I see my role as a steward, prudently investing taxpayer funds into teaching students the skills, character, and wisdom they’ll need to build strong families and careers. — Many people have encouraged my candidacy. I’m endorsed by Terry Katsma (WI Assembly Dist. 26), Amy Binsfeld (WI Assembly Dist. 27), Jacob Immel (SF Common Council), Gary Thelen (SF School Board), and Abbie Palenske (past PTA president). See what they have to say at EdBrey.com.

In my current term, we improved student safety by preparing teachers with a wider range of threat response options and modernizing cameras and communication technology. Now we need to give parents confidence that girls’ bathrooms, locker rooms, and sports teams are separate from boys. — We also improved academics by expanding our college-level and trade-skill courses and upgrading to new evidence-based curriculums in math and English. We should further expand our career readiness offerings. In English, we should bring the study of exceptional literature and precise language back to our academic standards. We should also bring back and expand merit pay to attract and retain top teachers at fair market rates. — We should teach our heritage as a great nation while learning from our mistakes. We should bring analysis of U.S. founding documents back to our academic standards. We should continue to keep our classrooms welcoming and to treat everyone with dignity and respect, but without identity politics like “Progress Pride” flags and “Safe Space” signs. We should replace polarizing political slogans on classroom walls with projects rich in perspective and critical thinking. — We should expand parent rights. Parents should decide what’s best for their kids, e.g. on gender identity. We should post instructional material online and end the Gender and Sexuality Alliance bypass of parent, community, and Board review of sex ed content. Letting the community in keeps special interests out.

I’m a 17-year resident of Sheboygan Falls and have run my own software engineering business for the last 12 years. Before that, I managed software engineering teams at Kohler Company and Eaton Corporation. I’m treasurer of our middle school PTA and was treasurer of our elementary school PTA. I also volunteer with Junior Achievement, Special Olympics, and the school robotics team. — I combine the experience and insight to assess our schools’ needs with the confidence to ask tough questions and make principled decisions. I bring the well-reasoned, articulate leadership we need to strengthen our academics and keep out special-interest politics. — As we address the major maintenance needs in our school buildings, my background leaves me well prepared to analyze the details and crunch the numbers. I see opportunity to dovetail improvements like lab upgrades and more natural light to inspire our students and advance their learning. Yet even amid a big project, each expenditure should be justified as cost efficient and worthy of your tax dollars.

What do you believe is the most important issue facing students today and how do you plan to fix it?

Number one is improving academic achievement. During my current term, we updated our math and English curriculums with more intuitive number sense and stronger phonics at the elementary and middle school level. I’m looking forward to working with our administration to bring those advances to the high school. We also need to better attract and retain top teachers with compensation that encourages high achievement and is fair to teachers and taxpayers.

What opportunities would you like to see students in your district be able to take advantage of?

We should continue to expand our college-level and trade-skill courses. Our existing offerings save our students thousands and jump start them on their career path. Let’s bring those opportunities to more subjects, such as computer science.

Being on the school board I can provide a platform to enact policies and initiatives that benefit students. Serving on the school board will allow me to engage with and represent the community, ensuring that their voices are heard in decisions that affect education. I don’t come to this position with a personal agenda, but rather an open mind, and a listening ear to the community of Sheboygan Falls, so that we can work together to help to create strong and successful people, who will make a difference in this world.

Discuss your experience and how it qualifies you for the postion you seek.

I am originally from Sheboygan and we built our current residence in Sheboygan Falls in 2004 where my husband, Paul and I raised our four children. I have a bachelors degree and a masters degree in education. I am a middle school teacher with over 27 years of experience. I currently teach at Oostburg Middle School. This is my first time running for the school board. I have served on a variety of school committees, including the Sheboygan Falls Booster Club, where I currently hold the position of vice president, I am also a frequent attendee of Sheboygan Falls school board meetings. I have been appointed to the city of Sheboygan Falls Fire and Police commission. I am a strong supporter of the Sheboygan Falls school district and have volunteered in the classrooms and the schools since my children were in pre-K.

What do you believe is the most important issue facing students today and how do you plan to fix it?

My own experiences as an active community member, parent and teacher, allow me to take a unique active role in shaping or educational policies and practices. My focus will be to find solutions and ensure that our students get the best education possible to be successful citizens in lifelong learners. I am driven by a combination of passion, commitment, to education, and a desire to make a positive impact on the lives of students in the community as a whole. All students should feel valued, respected and included, regardless of their backgrounds. We need to foster a commitment to creating a welcoming and supportive educational environment, where every individual feels empowered to learn, grow, and contribute to their unique perspectives to this community I would like to focus on enacting, better policies and engaging with parents, students and community members together, feedback, address, concerns, and collaborate on initiatives as necessary. in the current education environment, people have choices in where they enroll their children. As a school board member, I would do my part to assure that the Sheboygan Falls school district is top of mind. Balancing financial resources to support academic programs, staff, salaries, facilities, maintenance, and other essential services requires careful planning and decision-making. Ensuring that all students have access to high-quality education and meeting academic standards is a priority.

What opportunities would you like to see students in your district be able to take advantage of?

I want to see that Sheboygan Falls school district continues to be a school with clubs, sports, activities while preparing students to identify skill sets that will allow them to achieve their means of success in business or trades. I want the variety of classes but also the rigor necessary for all students to have opportunities to discover their passions and be prepared for the next step of education, service or life. Sheboygan Falls can be a top tier school with the best educators, staff, and students.
