Why are you running for office?

Hello, my name is Janina Siemers, and I would appreciate your support on the April 2nd election. It has been an honor to serve on the School District of Howards Grove Board of Education for the past 6 years and hope to continue to as an experienced Board member.

My commitment to our community and the educational future of our district is strong. My husband and I are invested in the community that we live in. We are proud of the education that our two sons received, and the current students are receiving. We know that our children have had unique, and individualized opportunities simply because they were students in this district.

I am not running out of personal ambition but out of deep commitment to our community and the educational future of our district. My husband and I are invested in the community that we live in. We are proud of the education that our children received, and the current students are receiving in the SDHG. We know that our children have had unique, and individualized opportunities simply because they were students in the SDHG. As a first generation American, my parents instilled in me that an education is a privilege and critical to everything I have been able to do. Education is the key to success for every single child, and I want every child to get an outstanding education. That is why I want to continue to serve. As a member of the school board, I have had the opportunity to share my business and life experiences to benefit my community.

I’ve dedicated 22+ years to our schools from many different levels (parent volunteer for 16 years, PTO member, mentor/coach for FFA, volunteer for the Play/Musical performances, part of creative committee to create Reality Day for the High School students, part of 3 successful Referendum committees, advocate for Special Education, and School Board member) and believe I’m uniquely qualified to serve our community. I am committed to our students and continuing to build the excellence that is the foundation of our district. I’m dedicated to collaborating with you as we pursue the brightest future for all the students in our community.

Currently the state of public-school education is challenging. From the financial crisis to balancing a budget with minimal new funding from the state is incredibly difficult for all involved. We need to provide the best educational opportunities to all students in a safe, caring and positive learning environment. Another challenge is the current trends of student learning gaps, as well as supporting students that are in advanced curriculums. Employee retention and compensation are what drives a district. Without having great staff and offering a great compensation package, it is difficult to retain the best to serve our students.

School funding is limited to the funds that are received per pupil from the state. There needs to be a clearly stated mission and vision of the district’s strategic plan to prioritize the needs of the students, the district and staff. Student achievement and Financial Responsibility need to be defined by planning and preparing the needs of the district. Setting education and instructional priorities, how are we going to fund these priorities, implementing the plan and making sure it is a sustainable and effect model for all the students of the district.

Collaboration with school Adminstration, staff and Board of Education is the key to setting major goals. It is not an individual or Board or Administration who sets the goals -- it has to be a collaborative effort by all. We need to be sure we are making the best decisions to have the best solutions to educate our students.

What do you believe is the most important issue facing students today and how do you plan to fix it?

Identifying the most important issues facing students today looks different for every student and every district and may change depending on who is labeling them – educators, parents, students or Department of Public Instruction. As a Board member it is my responsibility to listen to our school Administration, look at the data that has been collected and presented, to hear and define what issues we are seeing that need immediate response and how we can work towards finding solutions. Listing challenges that public schools are facing are classroom size, poverty, technology, bullying, student attitudes and behaviors, parent involvement, student health, funding and retaining quality educators. Thankfully, the School District of Howards Grove has been able to keep classroom sizes smaller in the elementary schools and have maintained classroom sizes throughout the rest of the district. With our newly passed Referendum, we put considerable attention on making sure that the district is functioning at a high level when it comes to technology for today’s classroom and for further planning in the future. Social/Emotional health is an especially important concern that has and will be a part of the school curriculum and focus. Currently the state of public-school education is challenging. From the financial crisis to balancing a budget with minimal new funding from the state is incredibly difficult for all involved. We need to provide the best educational opportunities to all students in a safe, caring and positive learning environment. What opportunities would you like to see students in your district be able to take advantage of?

The School District of Howards Grove – is a small, but mighty school district. There are so many opportunities available to students – from the Arts, to sports, to Forensics to FFA, to Future Business Leaders and National Honor Society, to performing in the Band and Choir at Disney World or competing at different universities for Math Meets or Business Challenges or State Volleyball or Dance Team competitions, SDHG has so much to offer and not to forget that, students can take advantage of a partnership with UW Green Bay or LTC to gain college credits while still in high school. Students can also work on their future trade profession with Cooperative Education with local businesses and get a head start in their future careers. Like I said, Howards Grove is small, but mighty! That’s where Community Involvement and Engagement are so crucial. Schools play an important role in every community and the School District of Howards Grove is no exception. Since children eventually grow up and become part of our community, it would be great to see communities take an active part in ensuring schools deliver great learning environments and opportunities to ensure healthy, successful and happy students. When you have a sense of belonging – a community – one feels accepted, valued and included. This boosts student retention and included by their teachers and peers this partnership is an important part of the academic community. The collaboration of a strong school community partnered with strong community relationship building would be a great opportunity for our entire community. Our students are our future, and it is our responsibility to give them the best education, social/emotional support, stability, encouragement, positivity, and confidence to be their best self.
