Relevant Experience 24 years on the board of a local government entity (Bloomingdale Park District in Illinois), 6 years as board president. 11 years on the board of the Illinois Association of Park District, chairman in 2021.

What do you see as the top issue facing county businesses in recruiting and retaining staff, and how do you believe it should be rectified?

The State of Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development analyzed Sheboygan County’s workforce in 2023 (https://media.socastsrm.com/wordpress/wp-content/blogs.dir/2281/files/2023/07/sheboygan-profile-1.pdf) along with 70 other counties, something that is done usually every two years. This last profile of Sheboygan County’s workforce identified four common barriers to employment: transportation, housing, childcare, and access to broadband. I know from virtually attending Sheboygan County Board committee meetings in recent weeks that the County is working already to address these issues. I will continue to work with both staff and other County Board members to ensure Sheboygan County makes progress in these areas.

Should county government take an active role in sustaining and growing tourism, and, if so, what initiatives can the County take?

County government should take a role in tourism. Local governments can promote tourism in several ways - sustainable tourism practices, sustainable transportation options, community involvement, etc. However, since Sheboygan County does not assess room (tourism) tax like the towns and municipalities within its boundaries, its role is more of support such as having liaisons to Sheboygan Economic Development Corporation (current County Administrator and County Board Chairman are on its Board of Directors). The County government as always needs to do everything it can to make Sheboygan County not only a great place to live but to visit!

Discuss your experience and how it qualifies you for the position you seek.

I served on the board of the Bloomingdale (Illinois) Park District for 24 years, 6 years as board president (park districts are usually a separate form of local government in Illinois). So, I have a lot of experience working with the professional staff to get things done for residents. I served on the board of Illinois Association of Park Districts for 11 years, chairman of the board in 2021. I have established relationships with state and federal legislators to help get good bills passed and get bad bills defeated. I have travelled to the state capital extensively, and to Washington DC, to identify and obtain grant funding for our district.

Why are you running for office?

I am running for the Sheboygan County board to use my 24 years in local government to contribute to the effective and positive running of Sheboygan County for all our residents, so that the county continues to be a great place to live and to visit. And I believe that we should keep partisan politics out of county government. Local government works best when all parties involved – elected officials and professional staff - are “pulling in the same direction”. Let’s not let our county government devolve into the mess that our federal government has become – where nothing gets done thanks to partisan politics.

Cite major goals you want to accomplish if elected and how you plan to achieve those goals.

My main goal is to become an effective board member and contributor in Sheboygan County as quickly as possible. As I did in my first few years in local government in Illinois, I will listen to and learn from the experts in county government – both elected officials and professional staff. There is a lot to learn. See my website – www.voteformikevogl.com
