Why are you running for office?

I have lived in Sheboygan all of my life. I have raised my family and earned a living here. I am a proud Sheboyganite. I have been civically active for my entire life and with this activity, I believe I came to the attention of the community. When the current Alderperson of my district made it clear that she wasn’t seeking re-election, members of the community approached me and asked if I would consider a run. In my short consideration, I decided it was my civic duty to run for the position. I have many attributes and experiences that I believe would help me be a successful Alderman.

Cite major goals you want to accomplish if elected and how you plan to achieve those goals.

In my opinion, past administrations have not properly balanced our borrowing with our capital needs. Because of this, our streets and other infrastructure really deteriorated. Currently, our Department of Public Works has an excellent plan in place to address these issues. I would work with the DPW to complete and improve upon those plans, including seeking state and federal funds to help lower the cost to the city.

How will you assist in bringing affordable housing development to the community?

Like any city, some areas of our hometown are vacant or are underdeveloped. We should seek out those entities wanting to develop them. What we need are more rental units all across the board, from affordable housing, to medium priced housing to higher priced units. With the increased amount of housing, people wanting to work in Sheboygan will be able to find a place to live for them and their families. It is a win-win.

Discuss your experience and how it qualifies you for the position you seek.

I have worked closely with members of the labor movement locally and statewide. I have lobbied on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. for working families on a number of occasions. I have been a member of the Planning and Allocation Committee of the United Way, taking the contributions received and allocating funds to worthwhile charities locally. Doing this type of work necessitates common sense and compassion. I believe I can indeed bring this compassionate common sense to the common council.

How will you assist with recruiting and maintaining talent in the community?

We need to sell all of the obvious things that make Sheboygan a great place to live and raise a family. This includes our beautiful lakefront, our schools, our parks and green spaces. To recruit and maintain talent in the community, a key step would be to increase the number of rental and residential units available so that the new talent has a place to settle into. Sheboygan sells itself if we maintain and improve upon the high quality of life that we already have.
