My name is John Belanger, and I’m running for Mayor of Sheboygan because this city deserves leadership that shows up, listens, and delivers real results.

For the last four years, Sheboygan has had a mayor who: Failed to communicate—canceling trick-or-treating mid-event without warning, limiting public input, and burying resolutions. Failed to lead—allowing Common Council meetings to be canceled due to lack of attendance, with no accountability for absent aldermen. Failed to prioritize Sheboygan’s real needs—focusing on “equitable streets” while potholes destroy your tires and our roads remain neglected.

And when Sheboygan was hit with a cyberattack, what did we get? No transparency. No accountability. No leadership.

This city is ready for something different.

I show up. I believe your government works for you—and that means being present, engaging with residents, and leading with transparency. I take action. I’ve served as your alderman, reduced city debt, and fought for responsible development that actually benefits Sheboygan. I deliver real results. I believe in Development by Design, not Default—a real plan for economic growth, housing, and city planning.

Sheboygan was once the best place in America to raise a family. We can make that a reality again.

Sheboygan deserves strong, transparent leadership after years of financial missteps, lawsuits, and lack of planning.

Affordable Housing Sheboygan’s housing crisis has worsened due to a lack of planning. The 2024 housing study shows conditions have declined since 2021, proving that the current administration has failed to lead. Affordable housing is one piece of the puzzle, but without a comprehensive approach, we will continue to struggle. The failure to update the city’s Comprehensive Plan has contributed to this problem. I will make this a priority on day one, ensuring Sheboygan has a structured, strategic housing plan that meets the needs of all residents.

Sheboygan was once known as the best place in the US to raise a family. We have lost that. I believe with proper leadership we can regain that status and notoriety. We have a good mix of professional and manufacturing companies that attract young people. We have the capacity to add so much more with an empty South Pointe Business Park. I will prioritize this. Young people need affordable rental units, as well as affordable single family homes. Affordable rental units will attract young people, affordable single family homes will keep young people in Sheboygan,

I am running for reelection because I believes in my hometown. I believe in a shared vision for a brighter future—a future where every neighborhood thrives, where families feel safe, and where every person has the opportunity to thrive. We have accomplished so much in the last four years such as completing 52 road repair projects, creating a new senior center, investing in public safety, and so much more.

Over the past four years, we’ve made significant progress, but there’s still much more to accomplish. To ensure long-term success, we must continue strengthening our local economy, investing in infrastructure by repairing and upgrading our roads, and expanding housing options to meet growing demand across the city. Moving forward, building new partnerships with community leaders, local nonprofits, and businesses will be essential in addressing our city’s needs. Solving complex challenges requires innovation, collaboration, and a positive approach. By thinking creatively and working together, we can drive meaningful progress and build a stronger, more vibrant future for all Sheboyganites.

I was born and raised in a hardworking, blue-collar family right here in Sheboygan, where I learned the values of dedication, integrity, and community from an early age. My roots in this city run deep—I attended Sheboygan South High School, where I developed a passion for public service and leadership. After graduating, I furthered my education at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, gaining the knowledge and skills that would later shape my career in civic engagement.

In 2017, I was honored to be elected to the Sheboygan City Council, where I worked tirelessly to represent the voices of our residents and advocate for policies that would improve our community. My peers entrusted me with the role of City Council President in 2020, a position that allowed me to help guide the city's legislative priorities and foster collaboration among local leaders.

Since 2021, I have had the privilege of serving as Mayor of Sheboygan, working every day to ensure that our city continues to grow, thrive, and remain a place we are all proud to call home. Through strong leadership, community-driven initiatives, and a commitment to progress, I remain dedicated to the people of Sheboygan and the future of our great city.

Sheboygan is deeply affected by the national housing shortage, driving costs higher as demand outpaces supply. To tackle this crisis, we need an all-of-the-above strategy that expands housing options. Modernizing our zoning code will allow for more flexibility and creative solutions, enabling diverse housing types to meet community needs. Additionally, we’ve built strong partnerships with local nonprofits to accelerate the development of affordable and workforce housing. By taking these proactive steps, we’re committed to making housing more attainable, strengthening neighborhoods, and ensuring Sheboygan remains a welcoming and affordable place to live for all.

Attracting and retaining talent in Sheboygan requires a multi-faceted approach that focuses on housing, economic opportunities, and quality of life. First, we must expand access to affordable housing to ensure young professionals can live and grow within our community. Investing in public amenities, vibrant downtown spaces, and outdoor recreation will make Sheboygan a more appealing place to live and work. Additionally, we need to strengthen partnerships with local businesses, and local groups to make our city a fun place for young professionals. By fostering a welcoming, and dynamic community we can ensure Sheboygan remains a top destination for young professionals.
