What draws you at this time to run for this position?

I want to continue serving on the County Board to advance policies that serve our residents while being fiscally responsible. In my first term, I fought for improvements to our aging infrastructure and voted to protecting our natural resources. I will continue advocating for these improvements.

Similarly, the County approved a plan to modernize Hillview Health Care Campus to be an innovative campus that will provide senior housing, nursing, respite care, and childcare. As a board member of two nonprofits that serve our community’s seniors, voting for the Hillview improvements was a proud moment so that our next generations of seniors can live with dignity and respect.

As a local attorney, I have experience advocating for people that put their trust in me. I also know how to work towards compromises when necessary. There is much more work to be done at the County level, and I look forward to working with other Board members to accomplish those goals.

What resources would you like to see at the county level that would benefit your district?

Our district is disproportionately impacted by the flood plain compared to other areas in La Crosse. The flood plain designation makes it more difficult to make improvements to property and costs thousands in additional insurance dollars for homeowners. The flood plain designation also makes it difficult to improve blighted properties or build in the northside of La Crosse without substantial investment to raise the land out of the flood plain.

While the federal government oversees the flood plain designations, the County should support homeowners seeking improvements to existing homes, and assist in building new homes by helping landowners bring their properties out of the flood plain. The City and County have programs available, but the programs need to make it more financially viable for a homeowner to invest in bringing their property out of the flood plain. We need more investment of local funds to assist floodplain homeowners on the Northside.

What in your opinion are the top two issues facing La Crosse County?

1) Lack of affordable housing: The homelessness crisis is exacerbated by a lack of affordable housing. Despite numerous new apartments and developments, rental prices continue to increase. Many of the "affordable" options have absentee landlords or landlords that will not invest in maintaining the property. Our community needs to continue increasing affordable housing stock, and we need more enforcement against absentee landlords/slumlords that do not maintain their properties. 2) Access to mental health resources: Our community struggles with a lack of providers of mental health resources. The result is that too many folks go without the therapy and counseling that they may need. Local government should work towards expanding services in La Crosse County through public-private partnerships with local institutions. We need to be committed to making sure that mental health resources are available for anyone who needs help at any time they need help.

How would you most effectively address the issues you identified in the previous question?

Affordable housing: As indicated above, our local governments need to be committed to enforcing codes and ordinances against landlords that are not maintaining their properties in an acceptable manner. In addition to these properties being terrible to live in, the properties become an eyesore and blight on the neighborhood. Mental Health Resources: I am not going to pretend to have all of the solutions to the issue of lack of access to mental health treatment. It is a complex issue that exists throughout much of Wisconsin. We have a strong base of healthcare facilities here in La Crosse to partner with to try to achieve the goal of having mental healthcare available for folks that need it. As we have done at the County level in response to other issues, our local governments should partner with the existing healthcare infrastructure to help address this issue.
