The County Board of Supervisors is the legislative body in every county in Wisconsin. The county board adopts an annual county budget, resolutions and local ordinances (laws). They also establish programs and public services for the county. Voters elect supervisors to represent their supervisory district for a two-year term in nonpartisan elections. There are no term limits.

What draws you at this time to run for this position?
As the incumbent candidate, I remain dedicated to listening to my constituents’ thoughts and concerns, as well as working together with county employees and other supervisors. All districts in our county have unique characteristics and needs, and I want to continue to advocate for the specific needs of District 28, and La Crosse County as a whole. I am committed to representing our local community.
What resources would you like to see at the county level that would benefit your district?
County supervisors are the biggest resource our local municipalities have in maintaining everyone up to date. I think it’s imperative for all supervisors to have open dialogue with municipalities and citizens alike so that everyone is aware of what’s being done. It is our responsibility to demystify what decisions get made at the county level.
Given that District 28 is more rural in nature, we have a more immediate need for the improvement of roads and infrastructure, quality access to broadband, and the maintaining of sound environmental and farm practices. I am proud to share that more funds than ever have been allocated towards improving our roads. Also, our Broadband Committee continues to work with the state, community leaders and internet service providers to identify areas of need. Lastly, municipalities continue to update their comprehensive plans, working side by side with our zoning department to ensure environmental well-being.
What in your opinion are the top two issues facing La Crosse County?
A couple of hot issues currently getting lots of attention are homelessness and housing availability/ affordability. Even as I speak with my rural constituents, they’ve been expressing their questions and opinions surrounding our homeless population.
How would you most effectively address the issues you identified in the previous question?
In addressing the homeless, I think the joint effort (Pathways Home) released by the city and county is a great starting point. There’s a misconception that homelessness is a housing issue, when there’s a lot more to it. We can address this issue by improving collaboration efforts between local government, philanthropic organizations, healthcare providers and law enforcement. Aside from lack of housing, many of these individuals may also have mental health issues and drug addiction (to name a few). Our greatest impact can be made by having more thoughtful, coordinated efforts.
Housing availability and affordability is a separate issue in our communities. We must do a better job at creating more housing stock that reflect our population. While some of this can be created with new construction at different price levels, we must also be more innovative. Furthermore, we can look for zoning regulations that maintain the uniqueness to neighborhoods while adding more housing options.
