What are your top priorities?
My top priorities are creating an agency who looks forward to serving and interacting with the community. I believe training our deputies has a lot to do with the confidence they have going into calls and the professionalism they show while interacting with the public. I will be setting agency goals and policies that align with that.
What is the biggest issue facing the sheriff’s department right now?
The largest issue I see is a lack of training and clear guidelines on how to perform their duties. There's a large lack of communication inside of the agency along with the agency and the community.
What is your assessment of the department’s budget, and is there any room for improvement?
I believe the department budget could use some refining. I don't believe it's too far out of hand but choices on where equipment is purchased does play a part is that.
How would you describe your leadership style, and how does that qualify you for the position of sheriff?
My leadership style is more guidance driven then a harsh "it's my way or the highway" approach. If the employees values align with the agency, they've been trained well, and they have clear guidelines I have an expectation that they should know what needs to be done. I'm not a micromanager. Do your job or find a new one. Selection of employees is a huge factor in our line of work.
What would you do to maintain trust between law enforcement and county residents?
I plan to maintain trust between law enforcement and the residents by keeping them informed on what's happening inside of our agency. I encourage them to come into the office, ask questions, meet our employees. I would also like to start a citizens academy where community members can attend classes where they will learn why law enforcement does things that they may not understand. I also think law enforcement should be in the schools interacting with the youth.
