What are your top priorities?
I have three priorities for the Sheriff’s Department. First, retention and recruitment of our most valued assets, our employees. Second, modernization, which will ensure we are efficient and effective in modern policing techniques and technology. The third is fiscal responsibility. I will operate the department on a thoroughly vetted budget where we focus on our needs not our wants.
What is the biggest issue facing the sheriff’s department right now?
Recruitment and retention of employees, a concern for all law enforcement agencies. We must ensure that our pay, benefits and opportunities remain competitive. If we don’t employ and retain the best, that could compromise not only public safety but also county finances.
What is your assessment of the department’s budget, and is there any room for improvement?
Sheriff Kelly Leben, who is retiring this December, has operated a tight and prudent budget, one that he is and should be proud of. This budget has focused on what is needed and is critical, not on passings fads and what is soon-to-be outdated technology.
That tight budget set certain parameters that are now nearly fixed because of the three percent cap on property taxes. This loss of local control is concerning and the consequences yet unforeseen.
How would you describe your leadership style, and how does that qualify you for the position of sheriff?
I have been with the Sheriff’s Department since graduating from the University of North Dakota with a degree in Criminal Justice. I have a good understanding of the Department and the men and women who staff it and of Burleigh County law enforcement issues. Being a Peace Officer is a passion of mine and a profession that I
am proud to be a part of. Law enforcement is a dangerous profession and I will 'lead from the front'. Never asking an employee to do something I wouldn't do or haven't done.
What would you do to maintain trust between law enforcement and county residents?
Transparency is one of the most critical aspects of law enforcement. The public has the right to access our policies, our budget and our processes. To maintain trust, transparency will be critical. Also, anyone who wants to speak with the Sheriff, gets to.
You call the Department and ask for the Sheriff, you will get me on the line. As a Sheriff voted in by the people, the people will have opportunity to talk with me, whether we agree or not on the topic at hand.
