QUALIFICATIONS: How does your experience prepare you for the duties of United States Representative?
Over the last nine years, I've served in the Maryland General Assembly—first as a State Delegate and now as a State Senator. Throughout that time, I've sponsored and supported a multitude of bills on abortion, public health, the environment, and education, among others. My experience in public office has shown me the importance of working collaboratively with my colleagues to pass common sense solutions that benefit the most people. It's this same work ethic that I would bring to Congress.
PROTECTING DEMOCRACY: What actions should the United States government take to protect voting rights and ensure the security of elections?
The events of January 6th demonstrated just how precious our democracy is and the importance of fighting to protect it. In Congress, I would work tirelessly to expand and protect the right to vote by supporting the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. I’ve also committed to continue sponsoring the For the People Act—originally introduced by Congressman Sarbanes—to strengthen voting rights and election security, eliminate partisan gerrymandering, and help to get money out of politics.
ENVIRONMENT: How would you address problems such as climate change and pollution?
As a preventive medicine physician, I understand the correlation between the environment and public health. We must be doing all we can to reverse the tide of climate change. In Congress, I would support policies—including the Green New Deal—that achieve carbon neutrality, reduce greenhouse gasses, and strengthen environmental protections. In addition, I support environmental justice policies that will protect our communities and help transition our workforce to clean energy jobs of the future.
IMMIGRATION: What changes would you propose in immigration policy?
As a child of immigrants, I recognize that the opportunities that were afforded to my parents paved the way for where I am today. It's important that we ensure that all individuals seeking the American Dream have a pathway to achieve it. Recent Congressional efforts to reform our immigration system have failed, and as a result, many lives have been harmed. If elected, I would support comprehensive immigration reform, a revamping of our work visa system, and a pathway to citizenship for DREAMers.
FIREARMS: Please provide your position on national gun safety legislation.
As a physician specializing in public health, I’m acutely aware of the impact of gun violence on our communities. And as a parent, I’m committed to stopping this epidemic that is plaguing our nation. In Congress, I would support a renewed ban on assault rifles, red flag laws, gun violence prevention programs, universal background checks, extended waiting periods to purchase firearms, the reigning in of conceal and carry permits, and the elimination of liability protections for gun manufacturers.
