Why do you want to be a School Board Member, and what qualifications and experience make you the best candidate?

Up until recently, I felt our district was on the right path and was in good hands. When things began to change this past year especially, I felt I needed to speak up. So I did. I spoke at two school board meetings, I sent emails, set up meetings and asked questions. I didn't always care for the answers. I felt we could do better, be better. I want to be part of that change. I have three girls in the district and have close friends and family who work in the schools. I know how hard our staff and teachers work and I know how much they care. That hasn't changed despite the turnover and disarray at the district level and new leadership at some of the schools. I promise to ask questions, be present and prepared and bring positive energy. I am so excited to see what we are capable of. Our future generations deserve it and I know the administration, teachers and staff are excited to make it happen.

What issues do you believe are the most pressing for the School Board to address in the next term?

I believe we need to prioritize our students, learning and teacher/staff retention. Our communities are only as strong as our schools. Our teachers have been giving 100% to our kids. Meanwhile, they haven't always felt supported 100% by the district. That needs to change. I am confident we will find the best superintendent for our school district. This is a very important first step to get back on track. We need energy, positivity and good people doing the jobs they are being paid to do. I know we can get back to being the school district that people want to work in and stay working in. I believe our students will benefit greatly from this.

How do you distinguish the role of a school board member from that of the administration, for example the superintendent and curriculum coordinator?

The role of a school board member is clearly spelled out in our bylaws and policy handbook. They say, "The Board shall oversee the operations of the District through Board Policy and within the parameters and authority as governed by the laws of the State of Wisconsin." The Board can act as an advocate for the school district and public education but the Board "accepts its primary duty to establish policies and delegates to the Superintendent the responsibility to administer such policies." I am not an educator and I won't pretend to be. It is important to let the administrators do their jobs while supporting the district and advocating for the needs of the staff and students.

Why do you want to be a School Board Member, and what qualifications and experience make you the best candidate?

Civic duty dictates that help should be offered by the public where and when it is needed. I am willing to offer my time, skills, commitment, and integrity to our district as a member of the PWSSD school board. My husband and I have called Port Washington home for the past nineteen years. During our time here we have raised a family, built friendships, and started a business. Our children will only be students in the district for a few more years, but I plan to call this city home for a long time. I consider myself a strong candidate because I am a critical thinker, an excellent listener, efficient in action, and stubbornly independent. I understand that I will be accountable to students, teachers, parents, and taxpayers and I will strive to honor these commitments and serve the community to the best of my ability.

What issues do you believe are the most pressing for the School Board to address in the next term?

The most essential task of a School Board is to act as a conduit between the community members within the district and the school system. The board needs to help our new superintendent learn about the district’s values, needs, and wants. The board will need to establish good communication with the community in order to rebuild trust. Finally, the board will need to tackle the issue of deferred maintenance and safety issues with some of the school buildings in our district. The board will require the prudence to tackle the most pressing immediate needs of the school system and balance them with the future demands of changing and growing community that has other expensive needs (Fire and EMS, new library, etc.).

How do you distinguish the role of a school board member from that of the administration, for example the superintendent and curriculum coordinator?

The school board is designed to represent the community’s voice in public education. Major duties include setting policy, creating a vision for the district, and evaluating the superintendent. The superintendent’s job is to oversee and carry out the day to day needs of the district.
