What is your background and how do those experiences and skills allow you to be an effective school board member?

After graduating from Dover High School in 1999, I entered straight into the workforce becoming a manager at only 17 years old. Around the age of 21 I took a job managing a lumberyard at Wyoming Millwork. After gaining 14 years of experience there, I decided to take a risk and start my own construction which I have now been in business for 6 years. I have spent the last 16 or more years coaching and volunteering in the Woodbridge community and have had the opportunity to meet a lot of students and parents. I am very passionate about our students' futures and have learned an outgoing approach to effectively communicate the children in our community. I look forward to using my skills to collaborate with the current board in any way possible.

What is the single most important issue facing your school district and how would you address it?

I think the biggest concern at this time is the teacher shortage. It is so important to obtain enough teachers and to have enough staff to eliminate teacher burn out. If we can't find enough, quality teachers to benefit our school district-it is that much harder to implement high-quality education and reach our goals as a district. I believe that the following are important ways to address the issue: reevaluate salaries and benefits, provide proper effective trainings that teachers look forward to, support and resources the teachers request and need to avoid burnout, paying attention to their work-life balance, and career advancement opportunities. Using diverse recruitment strategies to attract teachers can prevent gaps within teachers.

How should school boards respond to community calls for removing any curriculum topics, subjects, books and programs?

It is important for school boards to approach these situations carefully and thoughtfully. After listening to all community concerns, the board should carefully review the curriculum topics, subjects, books or programs and get a better understanding for themselves. If necessary, the board can consult with experts and relevant stakeholders on these topics and get more insight into the educational value and appropriateness of the materials in question. It's important to value the concerns of the community with the goal of providing a well-rounded education for all students. Following the already established procedures for curriculum changes can help as well as staying focused on educational goals to ultimately provide a high quality education

What kind of mental health supports do you favor in schools and how would you go about advocating for them?

I favor school counselors being available to provide individual and group counseling as well as crisis intervention. Having access to psychologists or mental health professionals who can provide therapy and further support is important. I would advocate to hopefully hire more staff in these areas if needed to help students in need. I would also advocate for well-known safe places in our schools where our students know they can go in time of need without judgement and fear. It is also important to educate the students, parents, and community about mental health coping strategies, stress management, and access to community resources. Having a crisis response plan is also important. I would collaborate with local mental health programstoassist

How would you ensure the district provides equitable access and meets the needs of all students, including traditionally underserved student populations such as students of color, low-income students, English-language learners and students receiving special education services?

This requires a proactive approach in allocating the resources needed to promote equity and support for all of these important needs. I would want to ensure that resources are distributed fairly across all schools and needed areas and provide effective and diverse professional development information for educators and parents. I would support individualized support programs and targeted interventions for students who require additional support in these areas. We should also take data to identify outcomes and use the information to make better decisions. Providing a welcoming school environment where students feel safe, respected and valued is a huge way to ensure inclusiveness.
