Lew Faust, Candidate for Manhattan-Ogden USD 383 Board of Education: Lew Faust is a native Kansan, born and raised in Derby, KS. After graduating from Derby High School Lew attended the University of Kansas. While in Lawrence he earned two Bachelors’ degrees, one in Education (Physical Education) and a second in General Studies, with the major being Political Science. His undergraduate minor was in American History. After completing his undergraduate studies Lew began his career teaching an

BSE(Physical Education)-Kansas University (May 1980), BGS (Political Science)-Kansas University (May 1981), ME (Educational Administration and Supervision)-Wichita State University (May 1989), School District Level Certification-Wichita State University (May 2008).

What would be your top three priorities if elected?
Supporting Educational Excellence by providing teachers and students the support and tools they need to be successful in the classroom.
Supporting Educational Excellence by being an active and engaged member of the Board of Education and making decisions that are based on student success.
Supporting Educational Excellence by being a good steward of the limited resources available to the district to accomplish the task of educating all students.
What skills, expertise, experience, or competencies qualify you for this position?
I spent 43 years in the field of education in a variety of roles. I was a teacher and coach early in my career and then moved into educational administration. I served as a building level administrator for 20 years. I spent two years in a diploma based adult education program and then finished my career as the Director of Business Services for Manhattan-Ogden USD 383. Thus, I have served at almost every level in an educational organization and feel that these experiences will serve me well as a member of the Board of Education.
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Members of the Board of Education need to be engaged in the policy development and oversight of the district. The BOE hires and evaluates the Superintendent of Schools and holds that individual responsible for the daily operations of the district. A BOE member must be actively engaged in the work of the district, in terms of current events and activities that impact the current operations and future planning for facilities, budget development and educational success.
