What makes you the best candidate for this position? What skills, expertise, or competencies qualify you?

I have practiced law in Reno County for seventeen years. I have experience in family law, juvenile law, civil litigation and criminal litigation. Previously I worked in social services and with a non-profit organization. I believe my background prior to law and my experience as a lawyer gives me a unique perspective which will result in fair and just rulings.

How do you or would you approach cases involving juveniles or first-time offenders?

I have worked in the juvenile law field for 17 years as a lawyer and for a social service agency for families for 5 years prior to becoming a lawyer. The goal with juvenile offenders is to stop the criminal behavior and put them on a path to be productive members of society. As for first time offenders, it depends on the crime committed and the circumstances of that crime. There is no one size fits all. Each case is specifically fact driven.

How do you or would you approach cases with a potential for racial bias or discrimination?

We must always be conscious of the potential for bias in the legal system. We must be vigilant for it and address it when found.

What is your approach to cases where mental health issues play a significant role?

I have represented many clients with mental health issues. Reno County has been working towards a better system of dealing with individuals in mental health crisis. It depends on the nature of the case, but mental health treatment should always be encouraged and seeking mental health treatment should not be punished by the court system.
