I am currently a college student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, in my last semester with an anticipated graduation date of December. As you can tell that hasn’t allowed me to have much of a Professional work background. When I graduated from Wyandotte High School in 2019 my first job was as an Assistant Debate & Forensics Coach at Wyandotte High School. I was the youngest employee in the school, but my focus was assisting the head coach in preparing each student for their tournaments

Why are you running for this position, and what particular experience, skills or resources will you be able to bring to it if elected?
As a USD 500 alumna I recognize the help and opportunities that I received when I was a student. I was a student who was classified Special Ed, I had an IEP (Individualized Education Program), I lost a year of my education when my mother was deported to Mexico, received poor scores in any standardized test, and had trouble retaining any information, Never the less I was fortunate to have parents, teachers, and a support group that helped me graduate and do well. As I now have cousins, nieces, and nephews who attend the school district I recognized that everyone isn’t as fortunate to have a support group like me, therefore I made it my mission to help and give back to the same community that help shape me into the person that I am today. I believe every student deserves to have a support group that is behind each student helping push them to the finish line of success, I am running because students deserve a school board member that is always a voice for them.
What is the most pressing need for students in your school district?
The most pressing need for students in USD 500 is adequate accessibilities and tools in order to be educationally fit and prepared when students leave the districts. With that being said we have to over look the curriculum, teaching methods, test scores, identify the problem and look for solutions that allow our students to be academically prepared when they leave USD 500.
What is your assessment of the district’s student-to-teacher ratio?
My assessment of the district's student-to-teacher ratio is that we have around 22,000 students in USD 500 but currently lack the teachers to have proper class sizes. Because of the lack of teachers we are packing students in classes which is not a healthy form of learning styles. When classes are big students and teachers lose that one on one and personal connection with each other which is crucial in being able to teach students. This is a big issue in urban school districts therefore we need to find initiatives and solutions to recruit and find more teachers.
How can the district attract more qualified teachers?
After speaking with many teachers from USD 500, and hearing stories of those who are leaving USD 500, pay for our teachers is on a lower level than many school districts that surround us. For many teachers it is easy to get a start at USD 500 but once they have the experience under their belt and resume it is often easier to leave and go to a different school district with more financial stability, more support, and less stress. We need competitive pay. We need to provide the proper support for our teachers so that they can be successful without students. We need to change the negative connotation that USD 500 has, that scares applicants away. We also need to find a more faster way of looking over applications, I have spoken to many of my friends who have graduated from college with an education degree and applied to the USD 500 school district as well as other districts but USD 500 replied too late, by the time USD 500 responded they already accepted another offer.
As a school board member, what action would you take to be transparent and accountable to families, teachers and staff in the district?
As a school board member the action I would take to be transparent and accountable to families, teachers and staff in the district is by having constant communication with these groups. For families we need to have a stronger form of communication and that is by being tech and social media savvy and using those resources, I plan on giving an update after every meeting on social media, and great an email list to send email to parents about important dates and crucial board meeting information. Since I am not to have direct contact with teachers and staff, I would use my connection with the superintendent to create an important line of communication. I would also commit to have a meeting or event whether it is a Q&A, Listening session or workshops to build relationships with the community and all the following groups.
