What skills and experience do you bring to the position of Emporia City Commissioner?

Eight years of Emporia School Board service; Four years as a small business owner; Fifth generation Kansan; Twenty-nine years calling Emporia home

What do you see as budget priorities for the city of Emporia?

I will work with fellow commissioners in the budget process to keep from pricing our community out of business. I will look for accountability and return on investment when allocating taxpayer dollars to local and regional agencies, organizations, and businesses.

What are your goals for the future of the city of Emporia?

• Transparency

I will advocate for plain language, open and accessible meetings and records. It should be easy to find your neighborhood crime statistics. It should be easy to find a meeting agenda or minutes for the many important boards of the commission.

• A level playing field

I will advocate for policies which give everyone an equal and fair chance of succeeding. For example, the city is currently represented by good people who all live north of 12th Avenue. Would our community benefit from districts or wards and at-large positions? I believe it is time to have this conversation.

• Compassion and candor

I will use a straightforward kindness to understand the issues, ask questions, and work to assist Emporians in knowing their rights and responsibilities. On a national level, this type of civil conversation is sadly missing altogether from the work of our policy makers.

What skills and experience do you bring to the position of Emporia City Commissioner?

Having a background in working with those of all ages in training and education environment lends itself to the cooperation necessary to get things done in a timely manner for the residents of our community. I am not a business owner and am currently a renter in the city so I am aware of the challenges that the working class endures and do not have any business interests that may receive benefits from being on the city commission.

What do you see as budget priorities for the city of Emporia?

We should ensure that current tax dollars are being spent wisely and an appropriate amount of oversight is given to what is taken in to the city coffers. Investment in our city infrastructure will pay dividends over time as those who reside here or may be looking at doing so, or opening a business will be positively impacted by investing in such infrastructure improvements. By doing this and partnering with county, state and federal resources where available (if they have funds available for cities and municipalities-we should be applying for it), this should allow for a stable economic future for the city.

What are your goals for the future of the city of Emporia?

We have a beautiful, vibrant city here in Emporia but we do face challenges. The goals that we all should be aiming for is that of a first-class city that provides for our residents and workers. We should be partnering with all resources available - political, non-profits and businesses to ensure that not only are we training and educating our residents, but that we are creating the jobs that keep residents here.
