Personal Biography I was raised in Kansas and am raising my family here. My children had the good fortune of attending Eudora public schools. I am a nurse, mom, wife, legislative wonk, social justice advocate, volunteer and writer. I am a regular attendee to school board meetings and district events and have been a participant in strategic planning meetings for the district and the schools foundation. I love Eudora Schools and want to be part of their journey forward.

What do you think is expected of as a commissioner/board member?

Eudora Schools offer big opportunities to kids without sacrificing the sense of community that comes from living in a small town. I want to make sure we continue to reward the efficient and innovative work being done in our district. I view civic engagement as a patriotic duty. Serving on the Eudora Board of Education would offer not only the opportunity for me to serve in this capacity, but also to encourage increased community engagement with the board. As a board member, and a Eudora homeowner myself, I will be dedicated to transparency and the efficient stewardship of taxpayer dollars. Being both a parent and a life-long learner, I view teachers as highly skilled professionals, with whom I look forward to a collaborative relationship. Local school boards need the authority and autonomy to guide operations to the best interest of the unique needs of their students and community.

What role your think policy plays in the functioning of your position?

I want to celebrate success and encourage innovation. Eudora Schools are full of educators who think outside the box. These educators see and foster the potential in their students, helping them find their best self. We have educators working together to maximize student experiences by collaborating to overlap programs like practical arts, technical education, extra curricular activities and business skills. I believe strongly in evidence based practice. I am an advocate for data driven policy and setting "SMART" goals for our district that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-limited. However, when educating the whole child, I don't believe we should ever just be teaching to the test. We also need to encourage creativity in the classroom. I would really like to see this reflected in the budget by dedicating funds to more professional development for teachers and more diverse experiences for students.

What kind of relationship should a board member or commissioner have with the community (including parents and families)?

Our schools are the beating heart of our community, and our educators are the life-blood. Eudora teacher's salaries are middle of the road in the area. If our teachers could go a few miles west to Lawrence or east to Olathe and make more money, we need to make sure that we are making Eudora a really special place to live and work, in order to recruit and retain the right talent to support our students. By fostering relationships with open lines of communication with teachers and staff, board members can benefit from the insight our educators have to offer, not only as employees, but as valued members of our community. By engaging parents and families in the district's processes and practices, beyond their student's classroom, the board can maintain a well-rounded understanding of the needs of the community.

What responsibilities do board members/commissioners have in regards to advocacy?

Those who know me can tell you that I have spent much of my free time for the last few years advocating for the constitutionally adequate and equitable funding of public schools by the Kansas Legislature. The opportunity to do this work has afforded me knowledge and experience that would benefit Eudora students and staff as a member of their board. Eudora faces many of the same challenges other public school districts in Kansas have for the last several years, primarily in the forms of inconsistent and unreliable funding from our state and the public devaluing of education as a profession. I’ve built strong relationships with many friends of public education in both the House and the Senate. Serving on the board would certainly strengthen my ability to advocate for the unique needs of Eudora students as our district navigates a path of restoration.
